@AnglinAnderson I'm part of an ed group, EVerydayAdvocacy.org Our website provides free help for teachers to address book-bans & censorship. A link to us in NEA's website resources on Racial Justice in Education could help NEA members. Contact me at stv.zemelman@comcast.net .

@plthomasEdD As the lead author for the "Best Practice" book, I'll take support for our progressive, kid-centered, effective teaching wherever I can get it. Amazing that 12 years on from the last edition it's still found useful and considered current!

The "science of" nonsense can't get more nonsenser. People are posting this on social media and saying it is "new research" from SOR and "science of writing" This is from Best Practice, newest ed 2012 heinemann.com/products/e0435…

@susangbarber Check out everydayadvocacy.org -esp. section "Opposing Bans". Teachers don't have training on addressing community controversy. They can learn about action that's informed, savvy, sustainable, builds support networks, but doesn't destroy their job. Glad to discuss further!

I’m on an upcoming panel about book bannning and how we can move forward with literacy instruction and reading in general in today’s society. What would you add to this conversation?

@JWhitePubRadio Re Trinity test: in 1963 I worked for Committee for Nuclear Info under Prof Barry Commoner, St.Louis. Our study on A-bomb test fallout 1951-62: Iodine 131 fell on grass, Nev. & Utah. Cows ate the grass. Kids drank milk, causing thyroid cancer. Want to talk w me?

A courageous 100 year-old woman protested book banning by the Martin County, Florida school board. Listen to her here: youtube.com/watch?v=jyWTgE… . Hear her as well at the Facebook page "Everyday Advocacy - Teachers Acting to Improve Schools" & get up-to-date news on censorship. 📷

@PENamerica @CathyFleischer1 @TheAmandaGorman Let's hope that the Escambia lawsuit and others like it pressure school administrators to think twice before banning or restricting access to books. It's going to cost them. It's harming children, subjecting them to implicit threats and psychological injury.

It's not a ban, they said. It just on another shelf, they said. But the truth about the ban on @TheAmandaGorman's book—as is often the case with book banners—was something quite different: An elaborate—& daunting—process for elementary school children simply to access a poem.
Jonathan Friedman 📚@jonfreadom

Just to be clear: the Miami Dade district that claims @TheAmandaGorman's The Hill We Climb hasn't been banned & is accessible to all students... has also clarified (when you read the fine print) that students must pass a reading test to read it. /1 washingtonpost.com/education/2023…

Tomorrow is 1 yr anniversary of pub of our book "Teaching for Racial Equity: Becoming Interrupters"! Much has changed. Censorship & racial backlash almost everywhere. But MANY ESSENTIAL EQUITY EFFORTS CAN BE DONE NO MATTER WHAT THE REPRESSION. Find ways to enact critical love

@ncte_elate I saved a draft of my ELATE 2023 session proposal. After I logged out & tried to re-enter the system it lost my password, & then it didn't even recognize my name. I hope someone at NCTE or ELATE can fix this. My proposal is ready to submit - but is it lost? HELP!

@smokeylit Smoke- Did you see yesterday's NYTimes front page article lauding SOR? Omitted any comments from serious reading researchers of course. I'm tempted to write a letter to editor, with Sarah Levine (@ Standford). What researchers do you think I should quote or refer to?

@DoctorSam7 @smokeylit Smoke- Did you see yesterday's NYTimes front-page article lauding the [sic] "science of reading"? Of course, they consulted no serious reading researchers. I'm tempted to write a letter to the editor. Who would you suggest as the best such people to quote or refer them to?

Whose SOR? That's the whole point of the blog. There are MANY MANY researchers who do not accept your "uncomfortable truths". You can't claim settled science when that many scientists still have major questions. To make that claim is misleading and false.
