This 🧵is long but important. I never understood death, what the body goes thru, & how much pain it's possible to feel until I was diagnosed w/ metastatic breast cancer, an incurable cancer.

Still in Shock....S138 has absolutely NO Waiting period. Like many i have worked to stop this and just learned that last night. So NYSEN going for something NO other state dare propose. So depressed people can qualify and recieve the AssustedSuicide Poison in 1 day

We shouldn't have to suffer while dying. As a Catholic myself, I WILL elect for this option when I run out of options. MY God wouldn't want me to suffer and be in pain.

Using that same logic, I would then qualify as well if I stopped treatment b/c I couldn't afford the $15K/month for ONE of my medications & wait for the cancer take over & I have 6 months to live. It's NOT happening - insulin is WAY cheaper & there is financial help available

@Stickit2Stage4 In Oregon, diabetes has been listed as a qualifying underlying condition. Under the practical application of the NY law, it would qualify here as well if a patient cannot afford insulin or chooses not to take it.

Diabetics don't run out of options It's also not for anyone else BUT a patients doctor to determine how much time they may have.

Terminal in the law is 6 months or less to live. People with Metastatic Breast cancer, like me, try to call it "chronic" because some of us live longer than the median life span of 18-36 months I was diagnosed Stage 4 from day one in 2013 I will eventually run out of options

@Stickit2Stage4 @_rebeccaclewis Yes- just to clarify, choosing to stop eating a drinking (which you're right! Is different and legal) was used in Oregon as a qualifying condition for a woman with Alzheimer's. The framework that allowed it in OR would allow it NY also.

In Oregon, it is also a qualifier to receive lethal drugs from a prescriber for assisted suicide, regardless of underlying condition. I'm so sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Sending you all the best!

@_rebeccaclewis So much misinformation in this debate! In states like Oregon, chronic conditions (and even choosing to stop drinking after an Alzheimer's diagnosis) qualify for lethal drugs from a prescriber.
