Hypothetical: You’re a field coach that wants to get as many skill building benefits as possible from box lacrosse but you have to make a choice — 1) Box rink with 6x6 goals 2) Regulation sized outdoor field with box goals and box goalie pads Which option do you choose? Why?
Brian Kelly@Brian_Kelly19

A couple thoughts regarding box lacrosse as a player development tool: 1) Simply playing box is a big step in the right direction. 2) Having a coach that understands why box makes better field players, and how to apply those ideas to any setting, is what you really should be looking for.

@e_cdalton @Brian_Kelly19 Older kids expected to lead younger. Relationships formed between older/younger players. Builds culture long term w/ some thought and expectations laid out for oldest guys as it can carry on as they matriculate into high school. I’m speaking from Middle School age perspective.

@e_cdalton @Brian_Kelly19 I’ve seen it as a coach first hand and many times have hedged against it (with success) by combining teams/age groups for training and practice purposes in developing programs. Tons of benefits come from it.

Youth coaches, how is attendance for you? Games and practices. There’s always at least one kid missing, sometimes two. Have also noticed this in other teams practicing at the same time. Never a full team. I don’t remember missing games/practices as a kid.

@Brian_Kelly19 @e_cdalton Less thought put into registering/committing due to tech plays a massive role in my opinion. Receive email. Click. Register. Pay, . No more having to physically register by going to locale, filling out paperwork, etc. Those were barriers to scheduling that have been removed.

I’ve noticed a steady negative shift in attitudes towards commitment/attendance over the last 2 decades. Probably many factors, but I suspect parents over scheduling in a misguided effort to get ahead being a big one. Kids largely experiencing sport through highly structured opportunities probably having negative motivational consequences as well.

Siena Men's Basketball honored Liam Gleason prior to tonight's game. Every player wore a Siena Lacrosse shirt during warmups. Every coach wore a Siena Lacrosse quarter-zip with "LG" patched onto the sleeve. A moment of prayer/silence was also held. @SienaLacrosse @SienaMBB

@Niner_m Long time listener, first time caller. I asked higher ups for clarification. It is legal to detach the hand/arm, but illegal to propel/launch the ball carrier.

Can the NCAA officials just come out & say the Crow Bar is outlawed? Cuz it’s not technically a hold or a push, but it gets called that way nearly every time.

@StickstarATX Short term, it means having (a) volunteer parents who love lax reaching out to their children’s friends and getting them out to try the sport and (b) having a robust system of scholarships and handout equipment that allows kids to try the sport without huge financial commitments.

@StickstarATX I think it comes down to town programs being ultra aggressive getting very young players (K-4) into the sport. Long term, the best programs build a lacrosse culture in their town that draws large numbers of young players and makes it competitive with tee ball and youth soccer.

@ChrisMarcRosa Agreed. I’d add to it that those other models look completely different than most lacrosse programming at that same age.

Create a culture where every player’s experience matters (even the “bad/new ones”) . Retaining players into HS should be the #1 focus of public youth programs. If it hasn’t been the focus the last 3-5 years, your HS program is likely on life support/will be in the near future.

What about kids that are already good? They have to practice and play with “bad/new kids? “ This attitude runs a lot of new players off in the current model. I blame the parents. Kids actually have the ability to be inclusive of their peers. Adults get in the way of that.

I think making it more convenient to play is huge for recruitment, retention, and growth. Watching from a distance, the Deuces in-house league seems to be thriving.
