If the uterus is not sterile before pregnancy, bacteria may infect the baby once present. In ascending infection, the bacteria colonizing the vagina crosses cervix & intact membranes infecting the baby. Infection via this route may cause PPROM, preterm birth, stillbirth, & sepsis
