I don't know if I'll come back to read much on this after I post but I thought I ought to say something.
A few days ago my father decided to take his own life. I've gone through every emotion you can think of in the past 48 hours. Heartbroken, sad, angry, confused. I never thought he would do this. But I do know he was hurting emotionally and physically, and maybe he felt as if his health problems were beginning to burden others or he couldn't handle the pain he was in any longer. Whatever his reason, I don't know if he knew how much he would be missed.
Without my dad, none of you would know who I was. When I was in high school, I asked him to take me to MLG tournaments to compete in Halo 2, back in a time when esports wasn't respected widely the way it is today. He supported me and would drive me over 8 hours to tournaments around the country to let me compete. One time he even drove 6 hours with a broken arm, had his cast upright the whole drive, to make sure he kept his promise to take me to a tournament even though he had just got in a motorcycle accident. I couldn't have become the person I am today without his support in ensuring I could travel to these things before I became a professional.
He also served our country for 22 years in the Navy and then even after retiring, he worked for 20 more years as a teacher at the Navy school to teach satellite and submarine communications. He had just retired in May. Sadly, I think he drew a lot of self worth from his work and that his retirement contributed to his depression thereafter.
It's hard to share this but I think it's important to be honest and talk about. Many men struggle more than we realize and are taught to be strong and stoic, never really processing their emotions properly. It's important to show kindness to everyone, as you never know what they're really going through. The world is so divisive at the moment, and I think it's too easy for people to disregard compassion for others for simply not sharing the same opinions. We are all humans at the end of the day and should show respect for one another. I know that's what he would want.
A quote we found on his social pages was "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace." -Bob Marley
Rest in Peace, Fysh.
Thank you for reading. Hug your loved ones for me.
