Entanglement is the #1 cause of death for minke and humpback whales in Scottish waters, with 9 cases this year. SMASS is taking positive steps with the Scottish Entanglement Alliance @Tangly_Seas, and the fishing industry to reduce entanglements and protect marine wildlife.

Two marine #entanglement cases were reported last week. A 9.6m #humpbackwhale found in Edinburgh with rope entanglement scars, and a 5.75m #minkewhale on the Angus coast with severe tail injuries. Images, measurements & samples suggest rope entanglement was likely cause of death.

🐋 A new report shows a surge in minke whale sightings but fewer basking sharks. This valuable @HWDT_org research is allowing us to track how whales and basking sharks are faring over the long-term off the west coast of Scotland. orlo.uk/9nBQW

Had a fascinating few hours yesterday helping the lovely Peter take measures and samples of this harbour porpoise for @strandings 🌊🐳 So cool to see this little cetacean up close! Anybody any thoughts on what the banana shaped markings might be?
