Stray Bullets Podcast

@StrayBulletsRUC

The podcast frequently discusses the RUC, plus aspects of sectarianism, often drawing on my experiences as a former RUC Officer during the Irish Troubles.

We're doomed to repeat our mistakes, especially if Jane Greer is involved. In "Out of the Past" (1947), gas station owner Jeff Bailey (Robert Mitchum) thinks he left his days of shady dealings behind. But gambling kingpin Whit Sterling (Kirk Douglas) thinks otherwise. #filmnoir

@chrisadonnelly There’s still an ‘observe from a distance’ culture among some in SMT as there’s a fear of damage being done to post-policing career prospects if a Gold commander makes a proactive decision coupled with a fear of possible, resultant, disorder.

Bluebells have been around in Britain and Ireland for thousands of years 🪻💜 A beautiful, but poisonous flower, it was once believed that placing a Bluebell beneath your pillow would prevent nightmares and bring about a peaceful sleep ☁️ Yet disturbing this fairy flower is surely a way to bring bad luck upon oneself and to hear them ring is said to be a portent of your own demise 🔔🪻

Today in 1970, Ohio National Guardsmen fire into a crowd of anti-war protesters at Kent State University killing four. "They were all on one knee and pointing their rifles at us," recalled one eyewitness. "Then they fired." The violence triggers campus strikes across the U.S.

"Despite killing 315 people, the overwhelmingly majority uninvolved Catholic civilians including women, two priests, and over 60 children, only a handful of British army prosecutions took place. "Convictions were even rarer." Read Mark Thompson: tinyurl.com/43nxhsn8

Sometime in the early summer of the 13th century, the Scottish bard Thomas the Rhymer is said to have fallen asleep beneath the fabled Eildon Tree, at the foot of the Eildon Hills 🌳🧚 When he awoke, he was met by a vision of enchantment...the Fairy Queen herself, riding a magnificent white horse. Captivated by her beauty and majesty Thomas agreed to follow her beneath the hills and into her enchanted world. There, time did not move as it does for us, and though his stay seemed no more than days or weeks, when he returned seven full years had passed ⌛ Yet Thomas did not return unchanged and having pleased the Queen of Elfland she gifted him the power of prophecy and the inability to tell a lie. The identity of the Eildon Tree has long been debated...some believe it to have been a hawthorn or elder, as both are deeply entwined with fairy folklore, but others suggest that only an Oak could have spread its canopy wide enough for the Fairy Queen to ride her horse beneath 🌳🌞

"It always needs to be stressed that every single killing in the course of the Troubles was equally wrong, whether perpetrated by loyalists, republicans or the forces of the state, but it should also be obvious that British soldiers acting as agents of their government must be held to higher standards than members of illegal groups." Stephen’s story is one of resilience and fortitude in the face of a terrible crime committed against himself and his fellow bandmates. Despite everything, I think, he enshrines a hope we might all share for a more peaceful, and unified future on our island.

Sixty years ago this month, I discovered a lifelong passion for the bass guitar. I was 15 years old and had played guitar for four years but it was the bass that changed my life in more ways than I could have imagined. It showed me the best and the worst this world has to offer.

@darrenleckey We did encounter a bit of ‘dark tourism’ around South Armagh at times. They paid a lot of dollars for little or no return.
