Every school deserves to be free from the madness of Motordom. Give kids space to play, clean air to breathe, and the freedom to move without fear of cars.

If only people running for office understood that cars enable crime, then they might not give them every flat surface in our cities. Here are some San Francisco examples: “Officer Involved Shooting near Union Square” Make @BestMarketSt 9/13/24 1/

Crossing guards are an admission of poor street design. What happens when the crossing guard isn’t there?

No helmets. No fluorescence. No carpool line. Happening nowhere in 🇺🇸 85 years later.

Streets designed for cars have caused untold damage—to public health, the planet, and society as a whole—and we must transform our streets to reduce those negative impacts (and reap the benefits of streets designed for people, including kids!). What’s missing is political will.

This is completely backwards. It has robbed generations of children from their autonomy and freedom, now to the point that we all think it can only be achieved via an automobile. It’s a disease that must be cured. Start with @Streets4Schools

Fresno’s traffic engineer, Robert Dier, was true to his training, which is much the same today. In 1951 Dier did not treat children walking to school as a form of transportation demand requiring accommodation but rather as a source of interference with transportation.

But perhaps what’s most impressive is the process for creating them: An iterative process builds trust with locals, then backs it up with capital improvements. Honestly, it looks a lot like how SF rolled out Slow Streets, except we haven’t invested in greening these spaces.

Every school in your city deserves an experiment with a car-free school street. #Paris shows how to make this happen! 🚧 (1) City adds temporary barriers 🚗 (2) If they lead to problems, they are removed 🤸 (3) If they work, permanent design is implemented (📹 by @Streetfilms)

When will we prioritize the health and safety of our children over motorist convenience?

All schools should have car-free streets surrounding. Routes to schools should be safe enough for an 8-year old to ride to school. Kids biking shouldn’t be a special event. Kids biking should be normal, everyday life.

An important point made by former active travel minister Trudy Harrison today: In schools, when you ask how many kids cycle to school: no hands go up. When you ask how many kids would like to cycle to school: all the hands go up. 🙋‍♀️🙋🏻‍♂️ We owe it to kids to enable them.
