I listened to Kenneth Okonkwo talk about “Ndi Igbo” while expressing his frustration about Peter Obi and I just laughed. I have never criticized Kenneth Okonkwo for any of his political views, most especially on Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso moving to NDC, because I understand his pains. Peter Obi spoilt his hustle and, to him, that is not fair. Kenneth Okonkwo knows that, first, he cannot easily pick any ticket in his constituency because he might waste huge resources without any victory. Secondly, he also understands that, as things stand today, Atiku Abubakar cannot win any election without a strong organic structure on ground. So, he was part of those who planned to use Obi and Kwankwaso as the model and face of ADC to attract Nigerians emotionally and politically, then Atiku would ride on that wave. But immediately Obi and Kwankwaso got wind of what they were planning, they quickly pulled away from ADC before the entire arrangement could materialize. Understand this clearly: anytime Kenneth Okonkwo appears on television to speak about Peter Obi, he is speaking more from a place of pain than hatred. Deep down, it is not that he believes Peter Obi cannot do the job. Far from it. He knows Obi has the capacity and national acceptance to shake the political space But politics, especially in Nigeria, is also about personal interest and survival. Kenneth Okonkwo understands that if he supports Obi and Obi eventually wins, Obi may not be the kind of politician who throws around juicy political offers just to grease people’s pockets. That is why he appears far more comfortable aligning with Atiku Abubakar, a man many politicians believe is generous with patronage and rewards. So, do not be too quick to blame a man who feels deeply pained because of how much political investment, expectations and possible benefits he believes he has lost. I am Ekene Aninze Esq.
