The arrest of the Agona West Constituency Organizer, together with the re-arrest of the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe, has drawn strong reactions from party executives, including the NPP flag bearer and former Vice President of Ghana, Mahamudu Bawumia. According to a statement released by the office of Dr. Bawumia and supported by the NPP National Organizer, the party accused the current NDC government of allegedly criminalizing free speech among opposition party supporters and Ghanaian citizens. The NPP leadership further claimed that freedom of speech in Ghana is under threat. From reports and public discussions surrounding the issue, it is alleged that the recent arrest of the Agona West Constituency Organizer, David Essando, may be linked to comments he made concerning the return of “dumsor” before he was later picked up by National Security officials.
