To overcome barriers to local engagement in rehabilitation & reintegration, officials from #Nigeria & Côte d’Ivoire called for recognising women’s roles in armed groups, prioritising victims’ safety & support, & recognising local leadership as key to successful reintegration. 4/5

Day 2 of the @Strong_Cities workshop in #Accra on the role of #cities in coastal #WestAfrica in supporting rehabilitation & reintegration of returnees focused on closing gaps between policy & practice, where decentralisation often exists in law, but not in practice. 1/5

Mayors from border cities in coastal #WestAfrica called for bottom-up approaches to rehabilitation & reintegration, expressing that political will, legal mandates & dedicated funding are key to strengthening local leadership in responding to terrorist threats from the #Sahel. 8/8

Dan Dano Lawally, former governor of #Diffa region in #Niger 🇳🇪, highlighted the need to embed #RR efforts in government systems, ensure sustained national leadership & secure dedicated budgets to manage returnees & their reintegration into society. 7/8
