Thou hast appointed repentance unto me that am a sinner: for I have sinned above the number of the sands of the sea

Me reading or listening to an interview when a term like “Christ-consciousness” is trotted out 🚩 🚩 🚩

@Prof_Cooper Whoa and I just went further down that thread. “Never read translation that rhymes” is a ridiculous opinion

@Prof_Cooper I’m very open to the notion that translating verse does not necessarily have to entail translating the form!

@NPWhite717 I saw an interview with Walter Hooper near the end of his life where he very confidently asserted that CS Lewis would have converted to RC if he had lived longer.

It's interesting that Coleridge seems so inspirational to later heterodox/liberal theological thinkers, when Coleridge himself, quite distinctly from many other romanticists, was so careful to stay within orthodox/traditional bounds, often with quite imaginative (heh) thinking.

I'm not above indulging in a bit of bemused schadenfreude that one of the most popular/publicly prominent ACNA priests is a woman (Harrison Warren).

I'm still never quite convinced by Vaughan Williams' attempts at buoyant scherzos, but his bittersweet contemplative mode is unmatched.

@Prof_Cooper I should also warn you that I work in college admin. (what most universities call "Institutional Research", but really just means official and internal reporting), but beg you not it hold against me! It's a living.

@Prof_Cooper There's no accounting for taste! I do also enjoy Grant Still a great deal. And anyway, that "dean" label was always silly.

The sun is out, the sky is blue, and the radio has ceased broadcasting the pastiches of Aaron Copland, in favour of William Grant Still's Afro-American Symphony, in which work there is more authenticity than may be found in Copland's entire lamentable oeuvre.

Interpret these labels as you wish them to mean either theologically, politically, or both: Would you rather be the most conservative person in a mostly liberal church, or the most liberal person in a mostly conservative church?

@Prof_Cooper I’m not good at explaining why I like music, but I have in the past described him as my personal favorite composer. But he is of course not for everyone.

@Prof_Cooper Copland is very, very dear to me. Not just the classic populist works, the “Symphonic Ode” runs in my veins! I think that even beyond the thematic materials, Copland just intuitively knows how to make music move forward in an incredibly satisfying way.

The KJV's "sweet savor" is such a wonderful, poetic phrase, none of the other English translations of the Torah are as pleasing to say aloud ("pleasing odor", "soothing aroma", etc.)
