No one would abide by a translation of the Bible that shoehorned everything into metered couplets. Alexander Pope's translation of The Iliad should be launched into the sea.

My favorite variation of this phenomenon is when they have online forums in which they discuss how it’s possible that various intelligent Protestants have not become Catholic.

It's interesting that Coleridge seems so inspirational to later heterodox/liberal theological thinkers, when Coleridge himself, quite distinctly from many other romanticists, was so careful to stay within orthodox/traditional bounds, often with quite imaginative (heh) thinking.

The sun is out, the sky is blue, and the radio has ceased broadcasting the pastiches of Aaron Copland, in favour of William Grant Still's Afro-American Symphony, in which work there is more authenticity than may be found in Copland's entire lamentable oeuvre.

@Prof_Cooper I’m not good at explaining why I like music, but I have in the past described him as my personal favorite composer. But he is of course not for everyone.

@Prof_Cooper Copland is very, very dear to me. Not just the classic populist works, the “Symphonic Ode” runs in my veins! I think that even beyond the thematic materials, Copland just intuitively knows how to make music move forward in an incredibly satisfying way.
