I have never seen Moulana Tariq Jameel, a prominent Tablighi/Deobandi scholar who has influenced millions of lives, speak in this manner. After mentioning that he prays for the Muslims of Iran, he sharply criticises those who, during this crucial time, question the faith of the Shias, by saying things like: “Are Shia Muslims or Kafir?” Moulana Tariq Jameel says that such people are fools (bey-wa-qoof) and intellectually blind (aql ke andey). He then states, “may Allāh destroy these people who are uttering such nonsense” (I might not necessarily agree with such a dua). I have met Moulana on several occasions, and I am well aware that he is one of the most gentle scholars; hence, his speaking like this highlights the importance of the issue. This is in addition to the decades of sectarianism between Sunni and Shia in Pakistan, which has cost many lives among scholars. Therefore, he speaks from experience. I am pleased that many senior Deobandi representatives, such as Mufti Taqi Usmani, Moulana Khalil Al-Rahman Sajjad Nomani, Mufti Abdur Raheem (Jamia tur Rashid), among many others, are taking a clear stance that guides many people, especially those affiliated with the Deobandi seminary. Please note that I am using the word ‘Deobandi’ as a descriptive referent to provide some context.

One of Pakistan's leading scholars and jurists, Shaykh al-Islam Mufti Taqi Usmani, recently delivered a speech on Iran and the issues of Sunni-Shia sectarianism. It is encouraging to see figures like Mufti Taqi and other senior scholars speaking with such clarity in these turbulent times. This is how true scholars lead and speak.

I am a hardcore Sunni Muslim from a traditionally Deobandi family. Some of my relatives are Barelvi and some are Ahl-e-Hadith.
