What is Liquidity? (And why most people lose money because of it) Celians, the tweet is purposely for you, so you understand how liquidity works. The difference between thin and robust liquidity, as well as the overall impact liquidity has on trading! With these lessons, you will be able to understand properly and know what to expect with the upcoming @CeliaWallet liquidity injection! These lessons are stratified into two segments, each of which has several cogent take homes. Part 1 Liquidity in crypto refers to how easily a token can be bought or sold without causing a significant change in its price. In simple terms, it measures the amount of money available in the market (or in a liquidity pool) to support trading. When liquidity is high, trades happen smoothly, and you can enter and exit positions without affecting the price too much. But when liquidity is low, even small trades can push the price up or down sharply. This is where many people lose money. Most beginners focus on the price of a token or how fast it is rising, but they ignore how much liquidity is backing that price. You might buy a token and see that you are in profit, perhaps your $100 has become $200 on paper. However, when you try to sell, the market cannot absorb your trade at that price. As your sell order executes, the price drops, and you end up receiving far less than expected. This difference is caused by price impact and slippage, both of which are stronger in low-liquidity environments. On decentralized exchanges especially, liquidity exists in pools. If the pool is small, your trade becomes a significant portion of it, and that distorts the price. The larger your sell relative to the available liquidity, the worse your exit price becomes. This is why profit in crypto is not just about price increase, it is about whether you can actually exit at that price.
