One year on since the inquest into Sam’s death concluded. Our experience of the coronial process is one of the reasons Sudden Sam exists. Supporting families through that system now forms part of our practical guidance charitable objective. Tom Hanlon Founder and CEO, Sudden Sam

Three years ago today, everything changed for us. I am proud of what has been built at Sudden Sam, and I hope Sam would be proud of it too. But today is about remembering Sam as the person he was – a son, a brother, a dad and a friend – not a charity. Tom Sam’s brother and founder of Sudden Sam

New Year’s Eve can hurt in a way that’s hard to explain. There’s a symbolism to it that feels cruel when you’re grieving - as if moving into a new year means leaving your loved one behind in the old one. But that isn’t how grief works. Love doesn’t stay in a calendar year, memories don’t expire at midnight, and the people we’ve lost don’t belong to ‘last year’. If tonight feels hard, you’re not doing it wrong. You’re carrying love forward – and that’s exactly what grief is. You’re not alone. Please do reach out ❤️

An open letter reflecting on 2025 – the impact of Sudden Sam, the people behind it, and the conclusion of Sam’s inquest, which continues to shape how we support others after sudden loss. Thank you for being part of our journey. Here’s to growing our services more in 2026 ❤️

If you’re spending Christmas with someone who is grieving, this is for you. You don’t need the right words. You don’t need to make it better. Acknowledgement, patience, and presence matter more than positivity or silence. Grief doesn’t pause for Christmas, and neither should compassion. Sudden Sam ❤️

I Carry You Everywhere is our first children’s book, created to support young people after sudden loss in a way that is honest and comforting. The beautiful illustrations, by the very talented Jo and Adam Cain, are inspired by real places local to Sam - key locations referenced in the text, grounding the story in the landscapes and memories that shaped his life. A gentle story of love, grief, and the people we carry with us always. Publishing soon. ❤️

We’re proud to launch School-Based Emotional Support for children and young people across the Liverpool City Region. This service provides specialist emotional support delivered by a Sudden Sam children’s therapist directly within a child’s school – in a safe, familiar environment, when it’s needed most. This project was written and shaped with school leadership experience at its core, and developed in consultation with Headteachers in Knowsley and Sefton, alongside Deputy and Assistant Heads and safeguarding leads across Liverpool and Sefton. The cost of support is fully covered by Sudden Sam. There is no cost to schools and no cost to families – because finances should never be a barrier to a child getting the help they deserve. Available to children enrolled in schools across the Liverpool City Region (Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens, and Wirral). More information and referrals via our website. Team Sudden Sam ❤️

When things get busy, hard, and demanding, we like to stop and reflect on why we're doing this. It's for him - Sam. It's for all the people we can help through his name and legacy. Some days the grief hits harder than others. But it's also what keeps us grounded, reminding us that Sudden Sam isn't just a charity - it's love, loss, and purpose woven together. ❤️

After a sudden death, so many of us are left with the what ifs. What if I’d noticed? What if I’d done more? What if I’d said something different? These questions can feel endless, and they can weigh heavily. The truth is, no amount of “what ifs” can change what has happened. But the feelings behind them are real, and they’re part of grief. At Sudden Sam, we understand how painful and isolating this can be. You don’t have to carry those questions alone.
