@virginmedia @joanne72hou I'm experiencing the same. Luckily, a client texted me to let me know an important email had bounced. Otherwise, I wouldn't have realised.

@Hep442 @robwhitepress @paul43471534 @stevelovescake Yes, I'm aware of the fact that pension is funded by those who are paying it and not saved up as we pay it. I'm very grateful, I have been able to work, for as long as I have, I was merely responding to the person who said hardly anyone pays NI for 50 years.

@Suepro38 @robwhitepress @paul43471534 @stevelovescake Not meant in a harsh way, but be grateful. Younger generations will probably get no state pension or at least far less in real terms. This is because you have NOT put in money that directly relates to what you take out. The taxpayers of today are effectively paying it.

Can some explain why a single pensioner that has worked all their lives and receives £13000 a year is taxed on income yet somebody on benefits getting double the amount pays no tax on benefits?

@kookopola @robwhitepress @paul43471534 @stevelovescake No children and I have never received any benefits, I have been very fortunate to have been in employment for the first 31 years and self-employed since taking voluntary redundancy. I've also not had any major illness, so I've been very lucky.

@Suepro38 @robwhitepress @paul43471534 @stevelovescake If it's not too impertinent, Sue, can I ask do you have children? If so, I'm guessing you birthed them with some sort of NHS support? They will have received healthcare over the years, as will you have. Not to mention child benefit, school funding, etc...

@robwhitepress @paul43471534 @stevelovescake Quite a few us will be contributing National Insurance for over 50 years, I've been working since the age of 16 ( I'm 63 next month) and I can claim my state pension when I'm 67 so that will be 51 years.

@paul43471534 @stevelovescake You pay in and receive free healthcare, benefits in case you cannot work and an index-linked pension at the end of it that it’s almost impossible to pay tax on. It’s not a rough deal. Hardly anyone pays over 50 years and most people are well short of that.

@Suepro38 Hello Sue, sorry for the email issues experienced. We were made aware of an issue earlier this evening but have been advised this has now been resolved and access is available again. Have you been able to try recently to see if this is the case?

@SE_Lipspeakers Perhaps the surgery should adhere to the Accessible Information Standard and ensure that their patient is given the support they require.

This same client complained to their GP about never being given access to a #Lipspeaker. Their response? They suggested the deaf person change surgery. 🥺
@SouthEastLipspeakers@SE_Lipspeakers

Todays client came out of a hospital appointment on a high. It was the first time that they had experienced full access via a #Lipspeaker. The great sadness is that this was the first time in 35 years this has happened. Let that sink in! #Bitter/sweet #EquitableHealthcare

@SE_Lipspeakers August is always a bit quieter for interpreters, too, but it hasn't been too bad this year. I hope lipspeaking picks up in September .

Looks like things have changed on the #Lipspeaking agency landscape. Following a major takeover, the agencies with the regular work have gone quiet. Let’s hope these jobs spring up elsewhere as we know the demand is there.

@Suepro38 They say I need to pay for further DBS enhancement despite having an enhanced DBS, working for loads of agencies and last month being okayed to be a PA for an autistic kid (nothing to do with lipspeaking).

Can any #Lipspeakers or #Interpreters who work with Language Line Solutions (also known as Language Line) contact me please? They won’t let me join unless I pay them and meanwhile a client is being left with no support as LLS is their agency.

A guy on my team reckons that the riot police (the ones with helmets and shields) are a different branch of the police. I don't know if that's true or not but if it is, I'm genuinely curious, what do these guys do when it's "quiet" a month ago for example, where were they? 1/2

@SE_Lipspeakers I think that there's a lack of awareness about lipspeakers and the role you do, particularly among those who book for NHS.

@Suepro38 Dreadful. I’m also finding the term ‘lipspeaker interpreter’ is being used, which is confusing.

Frustrating when a #Lipreader is constantly sent a #BSL interpreter even though they don’t have any sign language. Not all #Deaf people communicate in the same way.

@BSLterplife @bitmoreelbow It's what I do and most ethical practitioners. I sometimes work in a setting where there are a few deaf staff. I have supported 2 on the same day and charged half a day each or a proportion. I recently found out that another interpreter was charging them both a full day.

@bitmoreelbow That's always what I've done and thought it was best practice/common place, but apparently not 🤔

Well, I stand corrected. Seems this is common practice, and I'm doing myself out of faily deserved income. I think we can all agree that the "bragging" is icky, but the charging multiple orgs for the same time slot seems to be fairly widely accepted. Who knew.
Terplife@BSLterplife

RSLIs bragging about how they routinely will charge a cancellation fee and still take other work, for which they charge, is just not the one. What can we do to put a stop to unethical behaviour in our industry? Anything?

NUBSLI is 10 this week! In June 2014 we began with fewer than 10 interpreters and now represent around 40% of the profession. We continue to stand up for BSL translators, interpreters and deaf communities. Here’s to the next 10 years!
