@Sufferent This is a terrible idea. Gege, hori, Isayama are not "veteran authors".
Why should this only be about few mangaka. They already have outlets with loose schedules.
Shueisha should instead pay all mangakas & their assistants first. The fans should be less consumerist.

Ishida's been doing this for years, changed both his life and artwork for the better
Take Gege, Hori, Togashi, Isayama, put them in one mag to cook however they want, it'll work

The discourse around GenAI is so radioactive that even some of the most accomplished creators get their artist card revoked by the anti-AI mob for even suggesting the technology could be useful in reducing labor-time for manga which famously ruins artists' health & social lives.

@SamuraiSpirit8D I agree, it’s a tough sell. One I do think would be beneficial in atleast trying at some point to see reader reception and author freedom

@Sufferent I suppose it could work as a retirement home for older authors but it's a tough ask to get a consumer to become interested in a series from an author they don't know that comes out irregularly and maybe will never finish. So it's certainly not one size fits all.

@studiodevilart Oh of course, Jump+ and by extension manga+ is a good half step in the right direction. They still follow schedule/deadlines but allow for more flexibility.
Ishida resides in Tonari, which id like to see them adapt to its own digital magazine.
Physical is a different beast

if by magazine you mean a physical magazine, it wouldn’t work because they need to be able to put out copies on a regular schedule

Shueisha themselves already do this for Ishida & others in Tonari, to publish whenever he wants, whatever length he wants, however he wants.
All without editors, executives & sometimes no assistants.
Designing a magazine around this shouldn't be impossible.

For a digital magazine, it would lay vacant till an author drops their work. With more authors this gap would be less.
For physical this would be harder, like weekly jump would have to adopt a different style to print magazines

What I mean is, even if that veteran authors story doesn’t hit. The amount new eyes from that author is now in the mag, potentially boosting other vet authors and the mag overall.

Funny enough its been talked about for quite some time, alongside putting weekly jump on a 2 set rotation. Sets of authors rotate in and out every week so they get a break.

@Sufferent I think a more realistic choice would be to make an outright lenient magazine. For example u get 2 weeks for a 19 page chapter . Or one month for a 30 page chapter with a one week or month break every 3rd chapters depending on format. Fans , the magazine and the authors win.

But from my understanding, Ishida makes more money directly (less payout to editors, helpers etc) at a heathier rate without killing his passion.
You put more Vets together in the same place? Their name alone sells for everyone.

@Lord_Dwarf_Bard Author's would set their own deadline, chapter length etc.
Ideally, veteran authors you put together, eager to draw and create, the less "inconsistent" the whole magazine would feel.
Ishida produces more material than weekly & monthly manga combined at his own pace.

Like Oda can do what he does in Jump because of all the fouder supporting the magazine when he needs breaks. (I'm beaing mean)

@ahavahmani not exactly a pipe dream but also not simple either.
However, It's already being successfully done by an author with less fame, under Shueisha's umbrella for the past 5 years.
Imagine all iconic authors that want to draw, but scared to relive the deadly grinder.
