@OrientationFrom @julianHjessop Me too. Talking my own book as a mortgage borrower, but part of me also wants them to hike and the ensuing fallout to bury Labour for good. The way out for Bailey is to cite the Bank’s secondary mandate of financial stability, which I suspect he’ll do.

@julianHjessop Gut feel is to fade it. Hiking would only further the consumer demand destruction and make an already fragile labour market worse. Maybe contrarian, but I could still see a cut or two.

FWIW, I do not think that the UK interest rate increases that are now priced into the markets are a done deal. The future path of rates will still depend on the incoming data on both inflation and activity, and the need for at least 5 of the 9 MPC members to vote for a hike is still a high bar. But the statement today clearly left all options open...

@Marblechops79 @JohnPaulMarney @peter_sarris Yes - but the deleterious effect of Etonian/Wykehamist PPE grad types (who need to be excised from our politics brutally) doesn’t mean holders of SPS degrees aren’t morons in a different way.

@TrooperSnooks @denbypottery Doesn’t this exemplify Labour’s transformation? One might (I do, vigorously) contend that socialism is always the wrong answer, but the Lab movement was rooted in our manufacturing industries, nonconformity, the dignity of a job well done & just recompense for it. Dirty words now

This piece of @denbypottery sits proudly in the collection of VIP dust gatherers in my study. This grand old pottery's imminent demise due to soaring energy costs should haunt the current energy minister, and the equally incompetent fools who went before him. Sadly it won't.

@JohnPaulMarney @peter_sarris SPS was notoriously for thickos - we mocked them for it 25/30 years ago. One of the shocks of going to Cambridge/Oxford is that on day one you start selecting on a scale of relative stupidity, just like in real life, and not just the diversity candidates.

@peter_sarris Yet again, I'm slightly taken aback to find that someone I regard as pretty thick, is an oxbridge graduate. Blimey.

We all know why Nick Timothy MP singles out Muslims celebrating Ramadan in Trafalgar Sq. Not because praying is domination, but because he wants to blow a rabid anti-Muslim dog whistle for political gain. He should be nowhere near politics, let alone the shadow front bench.

@si_rubinstein Well that would be an interesting game for them to play given that Reform is their best hope as republicanism/disestablishmentarianism become mainstream on the left. The bishops of course are all entryists so will give the ermine up before their leftist principles.

If Reform gets into government it’s easy to imagine Charles/William undermining them by e.g. raising an eyebrow at some refugee charity dinner or making some pointed remarks about diversity & inclusion in the Xmas speech. There will need to be some kind of plan.

🚨NEW: The British right has begun to move away from a conservatism that naively venerates our long-rotten institutions, recognising the need for radicalism. As we re-examine our loyalties, we should not let the monarchy escape scrutiny. READ: pimlicojournal.co.uk/p/abolish-the-…

@shivmalik Because public policy doesn’t occur in a vacuum & adherents to only one creed are vanishingly over represented in terror and mass child rape while demanding exceptions to free speech. Odd that you’re faking bemusement when you’re happy to generalise about boomers and rural people

"just put it in your pension" is the UK answer to hitting 100k. so instead of investing in property or building something now, lock your money away until you're 55. that's not financial advice. that's a trap designed to stop you thinking about the system.

Further proof that the Greens can be depended on for the worst takes on every policy area. They want a wealth tax to spaff on the world. Global redistribution at your and your children’s expense.

Cutting international aid is a false economy – and one which puts Britain’s security at greater risk. The UK’s defence does not exist in isolation from global security. You cannot make Britain safer by making the rest of the world more unstable.

@EllieChowns This is utter nonsense. Soft power is a myth, and what we’ve been showering taxpayers’ money on has done nothing to improve security even for the beneficiaries.

Reading Labour's land use strategy makes me feel simultaneously sad, angry and depressed. In my 55 years on this planet, never have I felt more disconnected with a sitting government. telegraph.co.uk/business/2026/…

@juliatetley @TrooperSnooks It’s completely immoral. They have set themselves up in opposition to millions of our people and literally to our land to buy votes. I think we all recognise what Richard describes - the complete disconnection. They’re ruling, not governing.

@SuffolkMatthew @TrooperSnooks It doesn’t seem right that they can ride roughshod over so many people with no way real way of halting them. ‘Endure’ is the word Matthew. Each day brings a fresh horror. I hope people DO wake up enough to vote them out, if not I genuinely fear we could be lost.

@TrooperSnooks It’s horrifying. A new government will have to have a plan - legislatively and otherwise - to mitigate the damage. Agriculture must be seen as a strategic asset, like steel used to be. Basing policy on the continued availability of cheap imports is madness.

@RosieP4 @shivmalik Haverhill is a failed overspill town; the Thurlows etc are successful villages. Nothing suggests more of the former will work here, and that’s before AI comes for half the extant jobs in Cambridge. Also no mention of the GIANT development extending Haverhill into Little Wratting.

Well this takes the biscuit. We've joked about @shivmalik et al treating East Anglians as straw chewing bumpkins but just listen - he says that people in the Forest City area do not 'share a language' with people like him, so when he mentioned trams, metro and terraced housing they had no reference point! I am not sure it is possible to be more patronising than you hear, here. When I talked in my blog about FC about imperialism/colonialism, I could not have been more accurate.
