Infantile Sandhoff disease is an extremely rare and devastating genetic disorder that progressively destroys neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Caused by a mutation in the HEXB gene, it leads to a critical enzyme deficiency that prevents the body from breaking down certain substances. Symptoms typically appear between 3–6 months of age, beginning with developmental regression, motor weakness, heightened startle responses, and vision loss. This past Saturday, the Suffolk PBA attended the 8th Annual Promise of Hope Foundation Gala at Villa Lombardi's in Holbrook. We are deeply grateful for the hard work and dedication the Foundation provides to assist those in their most difficult moments. Events like these remind us of the importance of community, compassion, and support, and we are proud to stand alongside an incredible organization like the Promise of Hope.

Today, the Suffolk County PBA remembers Police Officer Jack Burkhardt, who succumbed to injuries on this day after being critically injured in the line of duty while protecting the residents of Suffolk County. Officer Burkhardt responded to a burglary call at a shopping center in Mastic where he and his partner were assigned to investigate the area. During the incident, Officer Burkhardt fell from the roof of the building and was rushed to the hospital. Despite the efforts to save him, he passed away five days later. We honor Officer Burkhardt’s dedication and sacrifice, and we keep his family, friends, and fellow officers in our thoughts today and always. His service to Suffolk County will never be forgotten.

The Suffolk County PBA thanks the Massapequa Board of Education for unanimously approving the real property tax exemption for surviving spouses of police officers killed in the line of duty. This meaningful action recognizes the sacrifice made by our fallen officers and ensures their families continue to receive the support and respect they deserve. We appreciate the leadership shown by the Massapequa Board of Education in standing with our Line of Duty families.

PBA President Lou Civello states, "Even possessing terroristic weapons isn't enough to keep you in jail. Our officers did a phenomenal job stopping what could have been a tragedy and New York State just let them go. Must we wait till they set someone or something on fire to hold them? Bail Reform should be the number one issue for this year's state election for every New Yorker."

This week, members of the Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association traveled to Delmar, New York, to attend the Police Conference of New York (PCNY) Annual Seminar and the Lou Matarazzo Dinner, where law enforcement leaders from across the state gathered to discuss various topics. A special congratulations to our own Suffolk PBA President Lou Civello, Treasurer CJ Hutter, and Sergeant-at-Arms Tanner Brandimarte, who received the Special Appreciation Award for their outstanding work on the weekly podcast “On Patrol.” Their dedication to highlighting law enforcement's work and fostering ongoing conversations beyond the badge continues to make an impact. Well-deserved recognition for three of our own.
