Pic: My grandfather, Khwaja Ghulam Ahmed Ashai with his Chancellor’s Gold Medal in a picture from somewhere in 1916-1918. 110 years ago, Khwaja Ghulam Ahmed Ashai became the first Kashmiri Muslim to attain a formal college degree in 1915, from the then Panjab University. Secured first class first in the Bachelor of Arts examination of the Panjab University, with the distinction of topping the list of all candidates and securing the first rank. He then attained his Master of Arts in Persian from Calcutta University, again in first division and order of merit, being awarded His Excellency the Chancellor’s Gold Medal. Attained a Master of Oriental Languages degree as well. Upon his return to Kashmir, he spent his life in selfless public service. Had the distinction of being the President of the Youngmen’s Muslim Association (that helmed the first political movement against the monarchy), founded the Kashmir Reading Room at Fateh Kadal, Srinagar and went on to be one of the seven co-founders of the Muslim Conference, going on to deliver its first Presidential Address at Srinagar. Upon developing irreconcilable differences with Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah over the conversion of the Muslim Conference into the National Conference and dismayed by Sheikh Abdullah’s capitulation to the Congress, Ashai Sahab abdicated his role in the party and active politics - even when the top slot in J&K’s politics was for his asking. He was the author and proposer of the plebiscite resolution and declaration which was introduced publicly in front of thousands of people at the Jamia Masjid - over which Sheikh Abdullah expressed his discomfort and opposition to him at the time in a personal correspondence with him. Yes, Sheikh Sahab opposed the Plebiscite Resolution at that stage and had no role in its adoption. While in jail, he staunchly opposed it in documented communications with all his colleagues. Ashai Sahab represented Kashmiri Muslims in the Glancy Commission and refused to testify before the Commission of Inquiry instituted to whitewash the July 13, 1932 massacre, questioning its credibility and neutrality. In a long and distinguished career, he served as the second Kashmiri to serve as the Princioal of S. P. college, the Inspector General of Schools, the Chairman of the Board of Education and spent the last decade and a half of his life envisioning and implementing his dream of the University of Kashmir, of which he became the first Registrar and Chief Executive for both academic and administrative purposes from 1948 to 1953. The Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir held the honorific, ex-officio title of Vice Chancellor for those years. He has the historic distinction of leading the first convocation of Kashmir University followed by an eclectic and distinguished group of leaders including the President of India, the Prime Minister of India and the Prime Minister of Jammu & Kashmir. The Government of Jammu & Kashmir officially named the Khalifapora (Khanyar) to Pandach Road as the Ghulam Ahmed Ashai Road on 13th of April 1988. The third floor of the Alama Iqbal (RA) library at Kashmir University is named the ‘Ashai Division’ in his honour.
