Hey Folks! We’ve decided on the official name for the white skin tone in Smart Doll Land - Porcelain White. The name is inspired by traditional Chinese porcelain. China was the first to develop true porcelain, with early forms emerging during the Eastern Han dynasty, later refined through the Tang, Song, Yuan, and Ming periods. It’s made from kaolin clay and fired at very high temperatures, which gives it that distinctive look - pure white, slightly translucent, and incredibly smooth. That material quality is what we wanted to capture with this tone - not just “white,” but something that reflects the smooth, slightly translucent qualities of porcelain. For the styling, we paired it with a cool-toned blue palette inspired by cobalt pigment - the same mineral used in classic blue-and-white porcelain. In Chinese, this style is known as 青花 (Qinghua), which refers to the blue decorative patterns created using cobalt under a clear glaze. Rather than applying literal patterns, we focused on expressing the feeling of Qinghua - soft diffusion, subtle variation, and depth in the tones. This Qinghua version of Legion will be available soon for pre-order. Hey Folks! Next up we’re going to work on a new anime guy sculpt. Could you let me know what you have in mind in terms of design? I’ve attached a photo I took in Shanghai of some lovely lads just for inspiration. If possible, please send illustrations or links to anime characters you like. Even better would be photos or links to actual figures, as they tend to give us a clearer sense of the geometry and proportions and help us better understand what you have in mind. We’ve recently seen multiple cases where customers are being invoiced incorrect import duties by FedEx. In one recent example, a shipment with a declared value of approx. $1,300 USD was invoiced at over $31,000 USD in duties and fees. When this happens, it becomes a hassle for both the customer and us. FedEx often contacts the recipient directly as the importer of record, and resolving the issue requires time and documentation from both sides. We are actively working with FedEx to clarify these cases, but given the frequency and the rising shipping costs, we currently recommend selecting DHL for US deliveries where possible, as we’ve seen a smoother clearance experience overall. What has your experience been so far with both FedEx and DHL? Do you find that one courier charges more duties for the same value item? #smartdoll

We’re currently experimenting with a color palette that works with the white skin tone, and it’s taking time. These images show some of the early attempts. Because the skin is slightly translucent, light passes through the surface, scatters, and reflects back out, which means the base skin tone strongly influences how colors appear. As a result, the same pigment can look very different once applied. The white skin tone also exaggerates color perception - subtle hues become more noticeable, and neutral tones can shift unexpectedly. For example, the freckles you see on Legion are actually gray, but they appear brown once applied. Next, we’ll be testing versions with less pink and without blushing, as blushing further alters surrounding colors through contrast and light interaction. If you’d like to experiment as well, feel free to suggest colors using the attached photos :-) #smartdoll

Heads-up folks! We wanted to share a bit more context around how our pre-order system works, as we’re still fine-tuning it together. Pre-orders were something many folks asked for, especially after experiencing small online releases that sold out quickly. In the past, we often released limited batches and hoped they’d find homes. When they did sell out, folks understandably felt disappointed and asked if we could offer pre-orders instead. Our approach to pre-orders is a little different from the industry norm. Rather than opening a window for months and shipping a year later, we keep pre-order windows short and align production closely with our team’s actual capacity. This allows us to bring products to more folks in a sustainable way, without overproducing or putting excessive strain on the team. That said, we’ve noticed that many folks place orders toward the end of the pre-order window. In some cases, all available slots are taken before the timer ends. When this happens, we often receive messages asking if we can open more slots. While we truly understand the frustration, the number of slots is carefully calculated based on team schedules, component availability, and our ability to maintain quality. It isn’t something we can simply expand on the fly. If there’s a product you’re interested in, placing a pre-order earlier gives you the best chance of securing a slot once the window opens. For folks who weren’t waiting intentionally and simply didn’t have the funds available at the time, we completely understand. We may offer another batch in the future, but it isn’t guaranteed. Some pre-order items return as regular releases, while others don’t. It depends on how the previous pre-order went, component availability, and what our team can realistically take on at that point. Thanks for your patience and understanding as we continue refining this system.
