As a woman who is Gullah Geechee from the Lowcountry I know and understand our strength is in our connection to our ancestors and what they were able to maintain despite the tremendous obstacle of chattel slavery. We Gullah Geechee know we are African people forced into an American experience. We know our ancestors crossed the Atlantic from the shores of West Africa into the Caribbean and then the mainland. We know that long ago we were separated from our families and made to learn a new language and culture while being told to forget what we once were and that anything associated with it is evil…..
Because of that many of us including myself choose to keep those connections alive. We refuse to deny our ancestors and where they came from. We refuse to deny their brilliance and wisdom. We refuse to shame that old world talent and innovation that paved way for the new. From Mali to South Africa to Congo and all over Africa is our mother and we are her children ❤️✊🏾
