44% increase in SGR cargo traffic & you want to attribute all that to a recent policy? Fallacious! How about Berth 22 that only recently came online & other measures taken by KPA to improve efficiency? Growth of traffic to Uganda? Growth of the Ke economy? EPA with the EU?

According to the Africa Star Railway Operation Company, following the implementation of China's zero-tariff policy effective from 1 May, container shipments from Nairobi to Mombasa rose sharply, with May–June average volumes increasing by approximately 44% compared to the monthly averages recorded earlier this year. The #ZeroTariffPolicy is delivering tangible results! 🇨🇳🇰🇪 #ChinaKenya #TradeCooperation #BRI

Following China’s implementation of zero-tariff treatment to all products from the 53 African countries having diplomatic relations with China, the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway of Kenya has witnessed a 44% surge in average monthly container volume on the route compared with the monthly average at the beginning of the year. As a flagship project of Belt and Road cooperation between China and Kenya, the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway has reduced cargo transport time between the Port of Mombasa and Kenya’s inland hinterland from two to three days to about five hours. It is also a critical component of the Northern Corridor of the East African railway network. As China’s zero-tariff policy further improves market access for African products, the railway is expected to play an even greater role in facilitating cargo movement from landlocked East African countries such as Uganda and Rwanda through Kenya to the vast Chinese market.
