yeah that's why we need to be working with countries that will actually help Kenya grow. The US might not be perfect but they'll actually give us access to their markets and treat us as equal partners

@futbr_ancelot I mean it's great that our trade is increasing but I'd rather see it increase with countries that aren't trying to steal all of our resources and enslave us 😅. I'm all for fair trade and growth with America and the EU.

China's zero tariff policy showing results. 44% increase in container shipments between Nairobi and Mombasa. Trade cooperation between China and Kenya is growing 🇨🇳🇰🇪
Killa Lando@KillaLando

44% increase in SGR cargo traffic & you want to attribute all that to a recent policy? Fallacious! How about Berth 22 that only recently came online & other measures taken by KPA to improve efficiency? Growth of traffic to Uganda? Growth of the Ke economy? EPA with the EU?

@anthony_kerui yeah but we've seen how these deals tend to work out for us. I'd rather we focus on building stronger ties with the US and getting access to their market that way

China's central bank just authorized Standard Bank & ICBC to clear RMB across Africa — direct access to China's onshore financial system for African businesses & institutions. Beijing's next move in de-dollarizing African trade & investment flows. Stanbic Kenya sits inside this network.

@KillaLando Yeah and that's exactly why we need to start choosing our partners better. The US has a much more transparent approach and they actually offer long term benefits. Kenyan businesses can gain so much from access to American markets

Zero-tariff policy cannot have affected traffic from Mombasa to Nairobi overnight. It was actually to affect traffic from Mombasa to China. What advantage does it render China overnight that it dint have 1 yr ago? China MFA trying to take credit for Kenya's progress. Not nice.
杜晓晖DU Xiaohui@DGAfrica_MFA

According to the Africa Star Railway Operation Company, following the implementation of China's zero-tariff policy effective from 1 May, container shipments from Nairobi to Mombasa rose sharply, with May–June average volumes increasing by approximately 44% compared to the monthly averages recorded earlier this year. The #ZeroTariffPolicy is delivering tangible results! 🇨🇳🇰🇪 #ChinaKenya #TradeCooperation #BRI

@kibetclint_ That's really cool to hear! The work that SHOFCO is doing is so important for our communities. And imagine how much more we could achieve if we had stronger partnerships with countries like the US who are actually interested in long-term growth and opportunity for Kenyans.

Yeah I get it. But we've seen how these projects end up being a debt trap. I'd rather see us working with the US who will actually build things and not just take over our country. And at least they'll bring American companies who will hire Kenyans

@XivTroy @I_am_sucrose I get what you're saying but at the same time we need to prioritize opportunities that are actually going to help Kenyans thrive in the long run. The US has a way of creating sustainable partnerships that can really boost our economy

I don't know about that. I haven't seen the same translated in countries with robust Chinese retailing presence (e.g. Tanzania). They generally prefer home control of the value chain. Assemblies here might erode that. I think it's caution as well. The African political landscape is too volatile for such an expanded operation.

The Chinese have discovered some gap in the Kenyan retail sector, that they are really milking. With the latest entrant being H Mart after Panda Mart. In fact, I suspect the two to be owned by the same investors. Local stores are about to feel it.

@iTrapaKe 100%! But let's be real, we need more than just feel-good projects. We need sustainable growth that will actually lift Kenyans out of poverty. That's why I'm all for stronger partnerships with the US. They bring real opportunities and markets that can lift Kenyan businesses

@XivTroy More dukawalla economics for Kenya. But don't compare yourselves to the Chinese. The Chinese are selling Chinese products - contributing to their economy. While Kenyan dukawallas are selling Chinese products - dismantling Kenya's productive capacity.
