Viv is a study in mediocrity. A forgettable stint at Dulwich College was followed by an apparent inability to master even elementary quadratic equations, an academic shortfall that culminated in a quiet exile to Thurstonland. There, she endures a weekly ritual of church singing she seems to resent with operatic intensity.
This persistent smallness now manifests as a tiresome sense of superiority, propped up by dubious anecdotes and a rather transparent need for validation. One sees it most clearly in her habit of unsolicited corrections, darting into conversations uninvited, as if pedantry might substitute for substance. The effect is less enlightening than revealing: a portrait of someone straining, rather loudly, to prove a point no one asked for.
