bell hooks said that White people will meet a Black person who completely challenges every racial stereotype that they have, but rather than giving up the stereotypes, they create a special category for that person and say, things like “Well, you’re not like other Black people”, instead of saying, “My ideas of Black people were too narrow”. This is called “subtyping” and it leads to the survival of negative stereotypes because the new category individual who’s supposedly “not like the others” is mentally isolated from the group. What this shows is that bigotry is all about protecting an existing hierarchy and it doesn’t matter much whether a person is exposed to other people or not. Which is why meeting intelligent, kind, accomplished, or complex Black people does not dismantle prejudice if someone is emotionally invested in keeping the stereotype intact. Exposure to facts and figures doesn’t change the situation either. Someone can know the statistics on crime, education, poverty, or discrimination and still keep racial stereotypes because the stereotype preserves a sense of superiority and avoids confronting historical responsibility. This is part of why bell hooks further argued that racism is emotional and ideological more than just purely ignorant, which is then why facts by themselves usually do not overcome a worldview that a person is motivated to preserve.

Y’all love Kill Bill though… but when Black women do it onscreen suddenly we’re not allowed our rage against the violence perpetrated against us.

Not to sound geriatric but...you know what i miss? Turning something on and it just works. No account setup. No app download. No QR code. No "sign in to continue". Just plug it in and it does the thing its supposed to do.

They removed CD/DVD drives from devices. They made physical media harder to buy and use. They removed expandable storage from phones. They pushed us into streaming subscriptions. They made always-online normal. They made unlimited internet necessary. Then slowly raised the price of everything. Ownership quietly became renting.

@girlgriot @afrofelines Getting the head wrap just right can be laborious. Some times it goes on quick other times you’re tying and untying over and over. This is coming from someone who has locs, wears wraps often, and doesn’t wear bonnets really at all.

What makes the bonnet discourse even crazier is that Black people already have a cultural option for days where we are “too lazy” to do our hair. It’s called a headscarf. I guess these are “too African” for those that pedestalize straighter hair textures.

@BriBritodad I have locs, I don’t wear wigs, I also don’t wear bonnets in public. Tying a scarf is different every time. I wear scarves often and some days it’s quick and others it’s not. Sometimes you don’t want the burden of tying and untying.

I’m gonna be nice. Tying a scarf takes about 1 minute. If we can watch videos and practice applying wigs and doing other styles we can practice this 🫂
🦋@Sure_Alright_Ok

@afrofelines These are legit styles in themselves tho. If your hair isn’t done under the bonnet and you don’t feel like doing it, this is still doing something. Getting the scarf right takes multiple tries sometimes.

@afrofelines What an odd response. Mind you I have locs and do often wear my hair in wraps and headscarves. Which is why I made the comment, getting a nice clean wrap everytime is not the easiest. If someone is seeking ease and quickness the wrap is not always the best contender.

Y'all are lazy as hell about everything EXCEPT worshipping Black males and their cocks. I give up! I no longer identify as Black.
