A lot of people who don't live in the northwest and aren't Labour voters hadn't heard of Lucy Powell until she'd made the 'dog whistle' comment about grooming gangs and their victims last year. A huge error but everyone makes mistakes. When Matt Goodwin was running in the Gorton and Denton by-election for Reform months later, Lucy Powell told him publicly that he wasn't welcome in Manchester. I'm not sure when she became the gatekeeper of Manchester but she clearly thought she was. She's now calling for civility between politicians. Maybe clean up your own side of the street first Lucy.

Lucy, you could start with taking a long hard look at yourself. I found you and other female Labour MPs to be utterly unpleasant, often deeply personal and unkind. I wanted to like you and to work with you, but you made it impossible. You preach respect, equality and women’s rights as long as applies only to people who 100% agree with you, your politics and what you stand for. You were almost all totally intolerant to any other point of view. Thank goodness Andy Burnham is a bigger person than that given that he’s about to take office. Your male colleagues tended to be less vitriolic, although not all, obviously - but the women … it was often baffling.
