A refugee camp isn’t where you expect a film school to change lives. According to Jessca Ireju, Sahrawi refugees have spent nearly 50 years in exile after fleeing Western Sahara, with many born in camps near Tindouf. Young people now record poetry, music, and family stories through projects like FiSahara. Around 200,000 people still live in these camps, relying on aid while building media skills. Cultural work here protects identity and creates jobs. What happens when memory fades before it’s recorded?

A woman climbs a muddy slope with 30kg on her back, chasing a few dollars to feed her children. Blossom Amena writes that mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo pulls in displaced families facing conflict, low pay, and constant stress. This matters because global demand for minerals rests on workers carrying unseen psychological strain. More than 6.9 million people are displaced, and fewer than 60 psychiatrists serve the country. Local support groups are stepping in where formal care barely exists.

Every time someone sends mobile money, visits a clinic, or speaks a local language online, a piece of data enters the global AI economy. Adetumlara Adetayo writes that large technology systems quietly rely on datasets generated across Africa, yet most of the financial and technical value leaves the continent. Africa holds more than 19% of the world’s population but produces under 1% of global AI research output. New policies, research networks, and open AI projects are trying to change that pattern. Data sovereignty now sits at the center of the debate. Who should profit from African data powering artificial intelligence? Read the full story now and decide: susinsight.com/africa-ai-data…

#WhatsTrending: On February 28, 2026, US and Israeli strikes on Iran triggered a regional conflict that disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb. War-risk surcharges rose, and vessels were rerouted, raising costs on Africa-bound cargo. Fuel prices soon increased in countries like Tanzania and South Africa as governments urged restraint. 🔍: Tomi Abe: @mrtomiabe, Adetoro Adetayo: @toroadetayo 🎨: Tomi Abe: @mrtomiabe #MiddleEastConflict #ShippingDisruption #AfricaFuelPrices #TradeRoutes #GlobalSupplyChain #Susinsight

A university degree once promised a clear path into work. That promise feels distant for many graduates today. Adetola Adetayo writes that around 12 million young people enter the workforce across Sub-Saharan Africa each year, yet only about 3 million secure formal jobs. A programme from #ECOWAS takes a different approach. Young graduates spend 12 months inside regional institutions, learning how real offices run while building cross-border networks. If you care about youth employment, education policy, or regional mobility, you may find this experiment worth watching.

The halls of #COP30 in Belém were crowded, hot, and chaotic, yet Africa stood out with purpose. African leaders didn’t wait for promises; they arrived with plans for energy systems, financing models, and industries that could shape the global green economy. With $50 billion pledged annually through the Africa Climate Innovation Compact and calls for 30% of global climate finance to fund African-led initiatives, the continent is turning words into action. Follow how Africa is moving from participant to architect, and why the world will need to keep pace with its bold strategies.

Fast fashion doesn’t feel cheap when the cost starts surfacing. South African shoppers were buying earrings for R42 and shoes for R188 online, prices that local retailers couldn’t source at wholesale. A little-known tax exemption called the R500 de minimis rule made that possible, letting Temu and Shein import goods duty-free. The South African Revenue Service (SARS) shut it down in June 2024, imposing a 45% duty and VAT on every parcel. That shift matters. Local unions say more than 8,000 jobs were already lost in five years. Are these platforms easing pressure or exporting unemployment?

#WhatsTrending: On November 22, 2025, Johannesburg hosted the G20 Summit for the first time in Africa. South Africa’s leadership pushed climate finance, debt relief, and AI ethics to the forefront, even as the U.S. boycotted.
