I’m teaching low cost yoga and free writing workshops in SF simply for the love of the game Not doing any of this for money — I simply want to contribute to the types of things I wish were more common in this city ✨ & I have the time and space to do so

Julie Clark Robinson is a writer and ✍️ Make Writing Your Job community member whose personal essays have been published in Family Circle magazine — where she was paid $1,500 (and $2,000!) per piece. She's here today to talk about how she built a writing career around personal storytelling, and how writers can actually get paid to write from their own lives. In this Substack Live, we talk about… ✅ How Julie leveraged personal essays to get her work published in anthologies and in a book of her own ✅ How no sample is too outdated when it comes to personal essays — good writing always belongs in your portfolio ✅ Best practices when pitching personal essays to editors using the MWYJ Pitch List ✅ Why great writing comes from the heart, and how no one’s is too “small” to write about 👇 watch the full interview below:

✍️ Do you want to read crime fiction that actually has really well-developed characters and storylines? Are you looking for something visceral and vibey and propulsive? Look no further — Jordan Harper’s books (most recently his excellent modern LA noir novels Everybody Knows and A Violent Masterpiece) absolutely require a place on your bookshelf. I was honored to be able to interview author Jordan Harper and ask him about his craft, his background working in film and TV. 👇 Watch the full interview below:

✨ My agenda today as a full-time writer, Substacker, and yoga teacher: ☕️ 8:00am — Iced coffee + stewed apple cinnamon overnight oats as I get started on the day! The fog is rolling in outside my window and it’s a perfect writing vibe. 🌁 ✍️ 9:00am — Working on a Substack post, prepping questions for an Substack Live interview I'm super excited about, and drafting notes for a yoga flow for Wednesday’s class here in SF. The beautiful chaos of being creative for a living 💕 🚶‍♀️ 12:00pm — Heading out for a walk. The ideas that refuse to come at the desk tend to show up on a stroll. ☕️ Afternoon — Grabbing coffee to chat ideas to break up the day! 📚 Late afternoon — Back home for reading and actual decompressing. Doing nothing, intentionally. 🍽️ Evening — Dinner party with a women + AI group here in San Francisco. Brilliant women experimenting with technology that always leaves me with an abundance of ideas on how to better run my own creative business so the boring stuff gets taken off my plate by robots. Can't think of a better way to end a slow day. ⚡️ sending y’all some creative vibes to kick off your day!!

SF is having the kind of spring fog that is like "walking through a cloud" and honestly it is great moody writing weather

I’m beyond excited to share that I’ll be interviewing author Jordan Harper this Thursday 5/14 at 10am PT / 1pm ET for ✍️ Make Writing Your Job on Substack Live! Jordan Harper is the Edgar Award winning author of books like She Runs Shotgun, Everybody Knows, and his latest LA noir novel, A Violent Masterpiece. The absolutely stunning prose and character development in Everybody Knows and A Violent Masterpiece made them ~ instant ~ favorite reads of mine, and if you want a look into the grittier side of Los Angeles, these tight thrillers are exactly what you should read next. 👇 bookmark the Substack live below to be notified when we go live + to get access to the replay!

hosting a yoga class at 3pm on a wednesday in SF because often people with mysterious income sources like writers, wanderers, those with obscure quests are the ones showing up and I love it 💕

✨ My agenda today as a bestselling author, yoga teacher, and San Franciscan who somehow scheduled her whole personality into one Monday: ☀️ 8:00 AM — Inbox zero (or inbox less). Sent marketing materials to the bookstore for the free writing class I'm teaching there soon. Details coming — stay tuned! 🥣 9:00 AM — Oatmeal break + back at my walking desk treadmill, steps accumulating, ideas percolating. 🧘‍♀️ Midday — Sending more invites for the yoga + journaling class I'm teaching at The Commons in Hayes Valley this Wednesday at 3pm. (Writers! Stick around after — Write Night happens right after class and I’ve really enjoyed meeting all of the cool people there. Come move your body, then come move some words.) ✍️ Afternoon — Deep in prep for my upcoming Substack Live guests for Make Writing Your Job. One is an author I've genuinely read and loved, with a new book out. More soon. I'm a little giddy about it. 📞 4:00 PM — Client call for a memoir ghostwriting project. Someone's story is being told, and I get to help tell it. 🏗️ 6:30 PM — Builder Night at The Commons. Ending the day with people who are building things. My favorite kind of room. I hope you’re having a creative start to your week 💕
