I think that Sunak has achieved three unprecedented things with this gradual abolition of smoking: a) devised a policy that is good for the country as a whole; b) followed through on a plan and c) shown some courage in the face of the libertarian extremists and corrupt corporate lobbyists in his party. If only that party had spent more of the last 14 years thinking about practical things they could do to improve life for Britons rather than lying, worshipping a narcissist grifter, lying, making difficult economic conditions worse than they needed to be, lying, fighting like cats in a sack for the leadership, lying and waging divisive culture wars.
