In 1979 Nike co-founder Phil Knight approached 19 year old Magic Johnson with a shoe deal.👀
Nike was just getting started. They couldn't match what Converse was offering in cash. So Knight offered him something different. Stock.
Magic said no.
His own words, "Converse offered me the most money.
When you grow up broke you take the money. Phil Knight said I can't offer you the same money but I can give you stock. I didn't even know what stocks was at that time. So I passed." Those Nike shares today would be worth an estimated $5 billion.
But here is the thing about Magic Johnson. Even that decision couldn't stop him.
In 1995 he partnered with Starbucks to open 125 stores in underserved urban communities that corporate America had completely ignored. When he sold his stake in 2010 he walked away with $75 million.
He invested $50 million into the Los Angeles Dodgers as part of a $2.15 billion purchase, the largest sports franchise sale in history at the time. He owns stakes in the Washington Commanders. The LA Sparks. LA Football Club. He acquired a 60% controlling stake in EquiTrust Life Insurance, a company now managing over $26 billion in assets.
But the detail nobody talks about? He started his career as a teenager cleaning office floors in Lansing Michigan. He would sneak into the top floor executive suite and sit in the CEO's chair - just to feel what it was like to be in charge.
Net worth today - $1.6 billion.
He passed on $5 billion in Nike stock at 19 years old.
And still became a billionaire.
When enrolling in university 4 years ago, I had no idea if completing a degree was possible at my age. But, I decided to have a go, and here I am at graduation day!
Thank you for inspiring me @latrobe ❤️🎓🥂
What makes some people move through the world with deep compassion while others become disconnected from it?
Why do some people instinctively want to protect, nurture, encourage, and uplift life?
For me, this has always shown up in my love for children, animals, humanity, and the belief that every soul has innate worth and value.
I believe each of us comes into this world with a unique “Soul Print” — something wholly our own. A light. A calling. A way of BEing.
And I believe so much of life is not about becoming someone else… but remembering who we already are beneath fear, conditioning, comparison, and the noise of the world.
That is the heart behind The Secrets of Being Circle.
This is not a space about fixing yourself, because I do not believe you are broken.
It is a gentle, heart-centered space for people who want to reconnect with themselves, trust their inner knowing, live more authentically, and remember the light they came here to share with the world.
If this resonates with your soul, perhaps you are one of “the others” I have been searching for too.
