The transition from early modern Japanese literature ❨say, Matsuo Bashou haibun❩ to modern Jpn literature can be grasped as the loss of the old analogic worldview ❨"double vision" as I sometimes call it❩ and the movement into im-mediacy and the psychologization of experience.

The days of High Woke were pretty terrible, and we suffered much under its yoke; and yet we now look back on those days with great nostalgia, wishing we could return to that simpler time.

"But how can we see into the souls of men?" you ask. Well, the soul of a man is revealed thru his deeds & words; just as we can infer God's ousia by observing & participating in His energeia/operations, so too we glimpse a man's ousia/nous/psuché by observing his actions & words.

*note: seeing into the soul doesn't necessitate moral judgment. modern historiography has rejected Carlylean soul-disclosure but for some reason has become even more chronologically snobbish & judgmental with regard to the past.

Historians should strive to see into the souls of the figures they describe; tho dismissed as subjective/unscientific, soul-disclosure is objective historiography; Thomas Carlyle, e.g., in his 1837 *The French Revolution: A History*, sees into the souls of Robespierre, Mirabeau.

While the miyabi–zoku [雅-俗] dialectic in the Sino-Japanese tradition invites various interpretations, it is most productively understood as a structural tension between “classical ideal” and “present actuality.”
