@theaceofspaeder In connection with my other reply, this is not how a strike is defined at all. “Reasonably hit into play” is far too subjective, as many hits, even home runs, are on pitches well out of the strike zone. Are those now called strikes because they have been hit out of the park?

Re: all of the meme accounts, as I've had enought of you today. You are too narrow-minded to realize that what I am challenging here is not the "fringe factor." So to say that a ball that is 50.00001% outside of the zone would cause the same debate is an obtuse misunderstanding of the point being made. This is about the reasonable expectation that a called strike should be a hittable pitched ball. The reason a pitched ball is called a strike is because the pitched ball could otherwise be reasonably hit into play. The reason a pitched ball is called a ball is because the pitched ball could otherwise not reasonably be hit into play. You are so wrapped up in this precise automation that you fail to realize that I am talking about actually playing the game. In order for baseball to exist, the ball has to be able to be struck, and when you are given those strikes all around the zone, it won't be. No more meme accounts for me today. Have a good one, you guys. Enjoy reddit this weekend.

@theaceofspaeder @MattStrahm I somewhat get what you’re saying, but at the end of the day, the zone has to be strictly defined and enforced on ABS (even at <.01”). When you start arguing umpires zone and “reasonably hittable pitches”, the zone becomes too arbitrary and won’t work.

Negative. I’m saying that I think this was poorly done. I think I explain why in the tweet attached, but my real issue comes in when you have, for example, an umpire with a tight zone who typically gives a little on the inside and a “strike” tight but out of the zone gets by and goes unchallenged early in the count because you aren’t risking that early on, and then a pitch like this gets over, called a ball because of the mutual understanding of the zone, but then ABS flips it. This is unreasonable to me, and honestly, I think it is a just and fair criticism. Just automated entirely then—expectations should be known, IMO.
Ryan M. Spaeder@theaceofspaeder

I do not, but I do think this change is bigger than people realize—umpires do not give an entire baseball outside of the zone on both sides of the plate. They will show the heat map of all called strikes and say “yes they do.” But they haven’t done that for more than a decade now—not at an in-game, game-by-game level. That, to me, is a problem. When you combine data and use it to tell a story without looking at each data point individually, intricacies are missed. And I believe that they were in this case.

@theaceofspaeder @MattStrahm So you don’t want a ball touching the zone to be a strike anymore… so how should the strike zone be defined? Your argument shrinks the zone by about 3 inches, so instead of 17”, you want 14”?

@Swilson2436 @MattStrahm …you turned 6 in 2000, brother. Eric Gregg passed in 2006. I haven’t seen that strike zone in the last decade—it was long gone.

@theaceofspaeder @MattStrahm Correct, it’s 17”. One part of the ball has to cross a piece of those 17” and it’s a strike. Hope that helps. Also go watch an early 2000’s game. Zone used to be much wider. This is the smallest zone in history 😅

The immortal visual of the entire Democrat party—upon explicit repeated invitation—refusing to stand for the core moral principle that US government owes its allegiance to US citizens and not foreign criminal invaders, is the most shocking image in the history of the US Congress.

Chris Bassitt, MLBPA executive subcommittee member, on the salary cap debate and why he's against it: “The salary cap doesn’t fix anything. If you look at every major sport with a salary cap, we have the best parity. The salary cap is not the issue. Having suppressed salaries across the league so owners make more money is not the answer. "If I would tell you in 25 years, the Dodgers would be going to 10 World Series and winning seven of them, is that an issue? Because that’s the Patriots. The Chiefs have been to what, six or seven? The Philadelphia Eagles have been to four or five. The parity in our sport is better than any other sport. "We will make changes to try to help the so-called bottom teams out, but a salary cap and suppressing salaries and taking from players to try to help the so-called bottom teams spend more? That’s not the answer. Because if you’re trying to make a competitive league across the board, we have proof that every single league [has] less parity than ours. So how can you sit there and say a salary cap is going to fix this when every single salary cap sport has less parity than ours? It makes no sense. "Again, the root of the answer is not the salary cap, and the root of why owners want a salary cap is not for competitive balance.”
