Green MP Hannah Spencer has said Parliament’s drinking culture makes her feel ‘really uneasy’.
Her comments, in an interview with PoliticsJOE, have landed her in hot water with MPs who have a soft spot for at work tipples, many of whom think she is naive to the traditional drinking culture of Westminster.
But Spencer is far from the first parliamentarian – particularly on the left – to have taken a dim view of British attitudes towards alcohol.

@RupertLowe10 The Iranian regime is a danger to us in the UK. It's not incompatible to support Israel and the US who are doing what needs doing whilst also securing our country from invasion.
Horrific news on the markets. Everything is already just so expensive for British families, and with oil prices soaring? It’s going to get worse. A lot worse. We should be honest about the consequences of the Iran war.
Petrol is going to get more expensive. A lot more expensive. What does that do? Drive up the cost of everything. Inflation. More and more inflation. The markets are in turmoil. Life is going to get yet more costly in our country. It’s reported that petrol may go through the all-time high of 191.5p per litre. Brutal. Absolutely brutal.
Who is going to suffer? British men and women.
Is this a surprise, after what’s happened in Iran? No, no it is not. What did they all think would happen?
Tony Blair, Farage and many others want Britain to dive headfirst into this war, but that is not the right decision and we should have the courage to say so.
That is what Restore Britain did on day one.
If Britain starts dropping bombs, how many of these Iranian illegal migrants that have already invaded our country are poised to act? To disrupt? To kill? There will be many more attempting the crossing. Terrorists? Spies? Soldiers? It’s just a fact. Plenty will already be in hotels across the country.
Endless foreign wars do not serve the British people. When Tony Blair is urging intervention in the Middle East, that should tell us exactly what we need to know.
That man is a danger and a disgrace.
But the immediate crisis is the soaring cost of living crisis that is about to get a lot worse thanks to the oil price and shipping disruption. And it is a crisis. So much is impacted. Major issues for farming, industry, everything.
Given our pathetic reliance on imports, Britain is spectacularly vulnerable.
Reeves must urgently slash fuel duty to protect British motorists, and everyone else.
Because British families are going to really suffer over the coming days and weeks. That’s just the reality now.
All British political parties need to start taking decisions that will solely benefit the British people.
That is exactly what Restore Britain is doing.
British people first, every single time.
I fear we are about to endure a very challenging and a very expensive period.
British men and women simply cannot afford it.
Reeves must act and cut fuel duty. This must now urgently happen.
Labour doesn’t seem to realise that offering failed asylum seekers £40,000 to leave creates a £40,000 incentive to come to Britain to be a failed asylum seeker
🚨 JUST IN: Hegseth reveals the US SUNK an Iranian ship in the Indian Ocean using a TORPEDO
“An American submarine sunk an Iranian warship that thought it was safe in international waters.
Instead, it was sunk by a torpedo, quiet death, the first sinking of an enemy ship by a torpedo since World War II.” 🔥
This is the same Pakistani inbred who spat on St George’s flag a few months ago.
Now he’s calling a girl a whore and bitch for rejecting him, and he also threatened to throw the girls off the bus.
@RupertLowe10 It's not just theft - I've read that Porsche headlights are sought after by those growing marijuana because they're so bright (the headlights...). Double the lawlessness.
This man is Indian. He was born in New Delhi.
He is head of our electoral commission
All high appointments including people standing to be MPs, should be only for people born in Britain with at least one British born parent . They should not be eligible for dual nationality.
@RedLipRiots Thank you for articulating so well. Very similar to my story. We've all fled London now - feels far more like 'home' in the working class parts of the home counties - especially the New Towns where many left for. The R word being used to silence people is laughably inaccurate.
@mazdaclub Really value some help, please, I've a 2018 Mazda 3 SE-NAV 2l petrol in the UK - brilliant,I have lost a piece of trim that runs underneath the sill/ rocker cover front to back on both sides. Does anyone know the part name and number, please? Thanks
@ssencommunity another power cut in RG12 (Bracknell). Had more power cuts in Bracknell in 3 years than in the previous 30 years. What's going on? I've a child in the power shower & a fridge and freezer full of food. An estimated time of being back online of 2.30am. Thanks.
In the world I came from, the news channels would contact people who have come forward with a story and invite them on air for an interview.
I had not realised, that after having been at the forefront of the campaign exposing the cover up of the gang rape of children, it was my responsibility to go begging to representatives of these mainstream media sources to be interviewed on a matter of national importance such as this.
So to avoid any ambiguity, here I am begging every one of these mainstream news agencies to give me an interview where I specifically present the evidence of the cover up of the gang rape of children and detail evidence of those involved.
Who will interview me live on their channels, as they have been interviewing so many others over the last week? I look forward to responses from;
@BBCNews@itvnews@Channel4News@SkyNews@GBNEWS@TalkTV.
Please tag anyone I’ve missed, or any journalist that you think may be interested.
I want to share documents that
1. confirm the cover up and who was involved
2. detail how the authorities responded
3. share the story of how a small team of campaigners responded

@PDJSwallow Peter - in the dark of the night, I hope you reflect on the children who will continue to be raped in part because of your decision to toe the party line. A cleansing light needs shining on this abomination and you've proven along with the rest of the PLP that you're against that
Tonight I voted to put children first, and bring in landmark new rights for parents and carers including:
Free breakfast clubs in every primary school
Defining kinship care in law
Increasing Ofsted oversight of & measures to cut profiteering in Children's homes
@46Ruthie@PDJSwallow I feared not. Yes, that's the beauty of it - all of these cretins who voted against, out of cowardice or something much darker - it's there forever and they will never be forgiven not forgotten.
Breakfast clubs mean every child will start the school day well fed & ready to learn
This is especially important for children with special educational needs
The Children's Wellbeing & Schools Bill puts forward reforms to protect children, and raise educational standards
@PDJSwallow I do hope you will show that you care about the victims of the rape gangs and support the amendment to the Bill tonight. This is a time to decide where you stand - it's a binary choice- no equivocation- history and your constituents will judge you.
"Petition: Call a General Election" has gained momentum quickly!
I'm not aligned with any political party and genuinely wanted this @UKLabour government to do well.
But I talk about politics every day meeting people from every shade of left and right...and I don't meet anyone who is completely happy with this government. Even @UKLabour members struggle - off air - to defend the actions of @Keir_Starmer and @RachelReevesMP
It is impossible to pinpoint just WHO they appeal to. They are completely out of touch with the mood of the country.
Comment below just WHO you think they appeal to - interested to know.
