So inspired by the youth-led discussion @foodtank climate week summit! From @sagelenier, founder of Sustainable and Just Future, “food brings people out of apathy and into action”

Wendell Berry on the separation of plants and animals resulting from industrial agriculture and the "farm expert": "Once plants and animals were raised together on the same farm — which therefore neither produced unmanageable surpluses of manure, to be wasted and to pollute the water supply, nor depended on such quantities of commercial fertilizer. The genius of America farm experts is very well demonstrated here: they can take a solution and divide it neatly into two problems".

This is a classic case of the most craven disaster capitalism, plantation-style. Prof. Kapuaʻala Sproat and I wrote about Hawai’i Governor Josh Green, the Maui wildfires and Native Hawaiian resistance: theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

In Israel noticing that foods high in fat, salt, and sugar are labeled with pictures of the ingredients (teaspoon of sugar, salt shaker, knife slicing butter). Simple, easy to understand labeling for all ages and nationalities. Why aren’t we doing this in the USA?

How do we get to big systems change to accelerate #foodismedicine approaches? Through storytelling and organizing. “The scale is too small and too slow for what we really need” says Kim Kessler @nycHealthy “we need to be bold and organize to accelerate change” @foodtank

Fruit from healthy plants doesn't rot; it slowly desiccates These tomatoes were left out on a table (intentionally) almost a year after the harvest date An extended shelf life is a feature of nutrient dense crops, resulting from healthy soil and integrated plant nutrition

Reflections from the Regen Ag & Food Systems Summit: farmers need decision-making power and resources, especially in the first few years of implementing regenerative systems; food policies needs to include funding for farmers of color; consumer communication is crucial.

In DC hearing from the farmers who feed us. #Congress can fix our food system by investing in regenerative ag in the upcoming farm bill, but we need to fight for these policy changes! We’re all responsible. We all eat. As one organizer said, “closed mouths don’t get fed”.

In 2022, USDA granted direct loans to 36% of Black-identifying farmers compared to 72% who identified as white. Asian & Black identifying farmers were accepted at lowest rates, denied & withdrew at highest. Here’s why & attempts to fix it @nprpolitics npr.org/2023/02/19/115…
