Norway’s WWII PM Vidkun Quisling has become a synonym for for “Traitor” *** Approximately 772 Norwegian Jews were murdered in the Holocaust out of a prewar Jewish population in Norway of roughly 2,100–2,200 people. That means about one-third of Norway’s Jewish population was exterminated. The key facts: The deportations were carried out after Nazi Germany occupied Norway in 1940. The most infamous deportation occurred on November 26, 1942, when the ship SS Donau transported hundreds of Jews from Oslo to Nazi camps. Most Norwegian Jews who were deported were sent to Auschwitz concentration camp and murdered there. Only around 34 deported Norwegian Jews survived. About 900–1,000 Jews escaped to Sweden, helped by members of the Norwegian resistance and ordinary citizens. One of the most painful aspects of the Norwegian case is that much of the identification, arrest, and confiscation process was carried out not only by German occupiers but also with the cooperation of Norwegian authorities and police under the Quisling collaborationist regime led by Vidkun Quisling. His name became synonymous worldwide with “traitor.” At the same time, many Norwegians also risked their lives to save Jews by smuggling them across the border into Sweden.
