New paper out 👇 We tested how cadence and intensity affect VO₂ and muscle oxygenation. Exercise Intensity but Not Cadence Affects the Dynamics of Muscle Oxygenation and Pulmonary Oxygen Uptake at the Onset of Exercise in Trained Cyclists doi.org/10.1123/ijspp.…

Max Kanter wins stage 2 in front of Laurence Pithie and Jasper Stuyven. 👍🇩🇪 With all due respect, this is not the highest level of sprinters I've ever seen in Paris-Nice. And Bini Girmay even got lost... #ParisNice

@laflammerouge16 I'm pretty sure half the peloton is using AI in some shape or form: race simulations, coaching, nutrition, scouting, automating press releases, power data analysis, and more.

I was surprised AI didn't land in cycling world yet, at least officially. Now it's official.

@JeroenSwart It’s onbelievable 🫣🙄 I thought our Cortex gas analyzer definitely needs a new O2 sensor… but now I’m not so sure anymore🤣

Can someone please go to Norway and teach the physiologists how to calibrate a metabolic cart. Seems we get dodgy VO2 data every second year with wildly inaccurate values and sensational stories about incredible endurance athletes. Only ever happens in Norway. Bizarre.

@jem_arnold @DrPhilipSkiba My metcart usually Tests low when it’s off and then it’s quite a journey to find the problem… love/hate relationship these things

@DrPhilipSkiba I've seen the same here. Heck, our own lab was testing probably 15% high until we caught the drift. The difference is we're not posting the numbers on socials (and they're not world-record breaking numbers anyway 😄)

It happens in the USA too. The data is usually generated by some community gym or coach, and the athlete turns up at my door asking why they have a “world-class” VO2max but cannot break 20 minutes for 5k. I tell them not to post the numbers online and re-test them.

Very sad to hear that Spanish Conti @IBalearsArabay suddenly closes, big fan of this team. 💔 It must be heartbreaking for the riders, getting this news just before the first races. I really hope strong climbers @asagrado and @jmgarcia_so will find a team right away, animo!

@faustocoppi60 22% than sl8, so if the sl8 is 15% faster than baseline…. 41.1 (and ostro is faster than s5 in their world) I know they probably meant watts saved, but in their marketing they just say faster, which is false marketing.

I ride on the flat terrain solo on my bike (alloy frame and wheels) at around 30 km/h. How much faster do you think my rides would be on this ugly bike? 🤔 If it makes me reach 40 km/h average, I would buy it.

@CoachFergie @ergonizer uses data from a step test to determine vLaMax. In about 80% of the cases it seems plausible to me (can compare with lactate curve and VO2) and helps in decision making.

@laflammerouge16 For people deep in the sport may be interesting. For the broader audience a elevation profile and total elevation is fine. More would only add confusion for the masses.

Total elevation gain in stage races is misleading without more context—especially when most of it comes in the first half or in non-GC stages. We should look at elevation in the second half, last X km, or only in high mountains. What do you think?

Jayco‑AlUla are in limbo for their 2026-28 UCI World Tour license: the key bank guarantees haven’t been submitted. Their riders could walk before the final roster is announced in December. In case they won't get a WT license, Cofidis is next in line quibicisport.it/2025/10/28/jay…

@jem_arnold I didn’t go too deep into the details, but as far as I can see nothing is new or groundbreaking. The data has been there for years, but practice shows different results. I’m also aware of many coaches arguing with scientists about this. regarding cadence, there’s still work to do

This is a much better narrative thread on metabolic & performance implications of cadence, than my brute force attempt a while ago (see below) 👏
Rod Siegel@RodSiegel

I want to bust a common #Cycling myth 💥 That spinning at high cadences is "more aerobic," shifting power from the muscles to the cardiovascular system, thus ⬇️ fatigue & ⬆️ performance. But science tells a different story. Let's break down the evidence. #CyclingScience 🚴🧵👇

For the amateur cyclist, I’d opt for heavy resistance training over «core stability» work 9 out of 10 times. Here’s why 👇🏻 wattkg.com/strength-train…

@CyclingResearch 3 riders, very limited age group, no clear specification on „back pain“, subjective rating only, no info on the intervention. How did this get published? Could be a blog post advertising fit service. The idea is good, but more work is needed as this topic is way more complex.

@SynergyProTrain @SteCRS One factor to consider (in my opinion as a physiotherapist) is that surgery can improve the structure of the artery, but not necessarily the functional/biomechanical factors which may have contributed to endofibrosis in the first place. Return to sport rehabilitation is critical

@jem_arnold @SteCRS Is there Knowledge on re-occurring cases? I heard Robert Wagner had to get surgery a few times ( not sure if the same leg, but I think the third surgery wasn’t a success)

@SteCRS In general yes, although I don't know his particular details. Surgical outcomes are predominantly positive. Lots of examples in the men's & women's peloton of athletes returned. Of course, some are not able to return to their best unfortunately.

On 23/12, the UCI published two documents summarizing the new rules effective from 1/1/2025. As usual, let's review the main points in this thread.
