It is with great sadness to tell you that John passed away peacefully this morning with his wife, Mary, by his side. For those interested, funeral arrangements will follow. The Campbell Family.

@_captainscience @HisenseUK You can sometimes invert the door so it opens from the other. Failing that, for a decade or more I glue Von a wooden drawer handle with Araldite.

@HisenseUK my fridge is less than a year old and the cheap plastic handle has snapped off. Apparently it's not under warranty and a new one is >£50. Pitiful.

I didn't realise I lived in exotic circles but I brought some camomile teabags into hospital with me and the nurses look at them with wonder"do you want milk in that"!

@CarlSmytheCells @MrBoltonPTpage This is not me, and for obvious reasons I won't be sharing the pics of my shingles but this is the dermatome. I can't exactly leave it uncovered and every time I move my soft t shirt feels like a burning hot grater. I'm feeling rather sorry for myself.

@_captainscience @gentillapin If it is pure urushiol based, it is supposedly soluble in acetone (but also ethanol— I would have thought IPA would dissolve it too) and benzene. I would think toluene would work unless of course it has begun to polymerise. Very powerful skin irritant too.

@gentillapin I have learnt that the proper traditional way is super complicated but that acetone will act as an effective thinner.

Any of you lovely Tweeps know anything about kintsugi? I tried to thin the epoxy with isopropanol to be able to paint a fine line on a crack but it just balled up.

@ggkuhnle Years ago I tried tablets from Heslthspan that guaranteed 5 billion bacteria. I found it really upset my guts. Perhaps because I am on PPI so more bacteria will survive the gastric acid

It's great marketing - but not necessarily very scientific. Yoghurt with some fruits will probably have the same effect and is much cheaper.

@_captainscience @Hippiepig There's a fair amount of evidence that selected lactobacillus strains survive stomach acid and affect the gut but not many, if any, seem capable of establishing a long-term niche E.g.: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25707300/

@Hippiepig How do you know it was the yoghurt? How many of the live bacteria survive pH 1-2 gastric acid? What evidence is there that these supplements work?

@_captainscience @Hippiepig Perhaps it's because I'm on a PPI but I find many of these live cultures upset my tummy (Yet to try kombucha)

@Hippiepig Not definitive, this is just a grift. There is so much about the microbiome that we don't know. And the fact that these have to be taken on a regular basis (Yakult certainly does) shows that they don't change the microbiome long term. Yakult is derived from gut (shit) bacteria

@_captainscience No expert either but if you have a modern consumer unit with mictoswitches do you need a separate isolator switch?

Wiring conundrum. I have a fused isolator switch. It works (light comes on) when there is nothing plugged into the sockets it but as soon as I try to switch them on the red light goes out. I fixed an obviously loose wire but it's still not working. V puzzled. Any suggestions?
