Sharks and rays now have a list of areas that are important for them, like the birds with their IBAs. We mapped out Malaysia’s 10 Important Shark and Ray Areas - there are unexpected gems among them: happy exploring! macaranga.org/embed/isra2024… #sharks #rays

1. Coral restoration is a long-term effort, and that's why we celebrate each step on the way. Check out some successful 2023 outplants!

There is so much in the pipeline for 2024-2026 thanks to @CORDAP_ ! We are already halfway with the phenotype pre-screening, with a massive upscaling of restoration operations to follow in early 2024. No time to waste #ForCoral and #GenerationRestoration
Coralku@CoralkuMY

We are grateful to be part of 2 @CORDAP_ funded projects, leading the development of a phenotype selection framework for coral restoration with partners @reefgenomics @Joseph_A_Henry @Szereday , Adilla Fauzi and Affendi YA. Spoiler: Team is already on site doing work #forcoral

For a talk, I updated the remaining carbon budget figure from @gcarbonproject based on a recent publication from @piersforster and colleagues. If CO₂ emissions continue like 2022, on January 2024, we'll have 5.25 years to use up the remaining carbon budget for 1.5°C.

@ProfTerryHughes I swam under their canopy too in 2013, Andros Island, Bahamas. Well, the corals formed tunnels and overhangs, it was stunning! But that was the ONLY coral reef that was geologically intact in the area that I had visited (probably 5-8 reefs).

@ProfTerryHughes and while we can only see 'the forest burn', such extreme heat probably has severe consequences on other marine life that we do not even understand. terrible..

Global coral bleaching events are inevitable & as reef scientists & managers we cannot cut emissions on our own. But we can work together and report observation on coral bleaching to further our knowledge. Please report! #seesomethingsaysomething

#SeeSomethingSaySomething NOAA declares arrival of El Nino & widespread bleaching is anticipated. We launched globalcoralbleaching.com to match satellite-based data w/ real-world underwater observations & as outreach tool to trace how things unfold @UniKonstanz @ICRSreefstudent

1. Coral cover is not a great metric to benchmark coral reef health, yet most reef monitoring efforts predominantly focus on this 'reef health indicator'. A regional assessment across SEA: #Sec2" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">nature.com/articles/s4200…

Eenie, meenie, meiny mo. Which corals are the strongest of them all? @coralku is taking the guesswork out by using rigorous science to select ‘super coral’ individuals that can withstand warmer seas. Critical with El Niño. A photo essay. macaranga.org/urgent-search-… #SeaWorld

Here we go again - my 4th bleaching event since 2015. At least it is not very severe, only some taxa are impacted, and we have an opportunity to validate empirical #CBASS thresholds. Is this what a 21st century career in coral reef science & conservations is supposed to be like?

1. Today is 'World Reef Awareness Day' and we were severed a stark reminder of what the present & future looks like for coral reefs worldwide. We are witnessing the 3rd #coral #bleaching event in 5 years (2019-2020, 2023), before the forthcoming #ElNino magnifies temperatures.
