The tail tips are very different between the two. The MGP uses a mostly clear tail tip with no extra dry brushing, but it carries a beautiful purple-white and silver coloration that illuminates wonderfully. The OG includes two tail tips. The first is a standard closed version that is also mostly clear, though less vibrant, with added dry-brushed highlights. The second is the opened jaw tail tip, painted in opaque purple with red in the crevices. It looks great, but loses the translucent effect. Articulation engineering is the same between both figures. The real difference is joint tolerance. The MGP has near-perfect tolerances, while the OG often struggles to hold poses—especially in the tail and legs. The arms are also very stiff and somewhat limited in range. Everything else functions well enough. In terms of extras, the MGP includes a paper craft movie poster. The OG includes two purple beam effects for the mouth and tail, a fire-smoke effect with a dedicated detached base, and the alternate Split Jaw head parts. Overall, the MGP is the better Awakening version. The light piping is fantastic, and the purple paint applications look closer to what is seen on screen than the OG. However, the OG still has very cool extras that make it a desirable release to hunt down. If you own both, you can mix and match the Split Jaw head and tail parts, and the other effect accessories work well with the MGP too. Perhaps one day we’ll get one final Awakening Shin—the ultimate version that includes everything. Until then, pick up the MGP.

The MGP’s tail paint application is much more superior than the OG’s. The glow effect still pops, and the segmented purple illumination looks beautiful when lit. The OG’s dorsal tail section is cleanly painted, but lacks natural falloff on the sides. It also features red paint along the outer edge of each segment, while the protruding dorsals are painted in a silver-black finish.

S.H.MonsterArts Godzilla (2016) [Awakening Ver.] -Movie Graphic Plus- vs. Godzilla (2016) [Awakening Ver.] Two versions of Awakening—but which one did it better? Both figures are made entirely of translucent plastic, but the paint application differs significantly between the two releases. Starting with the regular head, the MGP version is mostly dark, with translucent areas more visible in the eye sockets. The OG Awakening uses a clearer paint application with the plastic cast in red, allowing for stronger light piping. Additionally, the finer details stand out more on the OG head thanks to the contrast between the red and black. On the MGP, the teeth are painted to simulate a glow effect, whereas the OG has each tooth painted individually with no glow effect. The eye paint on the MGP also covers more of the sculpt, while the OG features an added black sclera layer that makes the eyes appear smaller by comparison. The Split Jaw head uses the first OG Shin mold, which can be identified by the seam line along the upper jaw lips. It also features additional red paint in the crevices. The eye has a silver coating over it, with the pupil barely visible.

The included papercraft poster art looks great. There are no consistency issues between figures—colors are vibrant, alignment is clean, and there are no visible misprints. Articulation is unchanged from the OG release. Joint tolerance continues to improve, with the MGP version being the best yet for this mold. The tail is solid and can hold many poses. The arms are not overly tight and move much easier. The torso and legs feel secure with no drooping, and even the jaw articulation works well without looseness. Overall: Even though I’ve spent most of this review pointing out how full of variance this figure is, each one still stands as a strong representation of the character on its own. I’d say this is a very solid second entry in the new subline, while also being a much-desired variant for western collectors.

Like the main body, the tail varies in paint application, so light-piping results can differ wildly. The top of the tail also varies in the purple-red-silver application, particularly on the scutes and spike sections, with some leaning more red and others more purple. The tail tip varies in purple vibrancy as well. Blending at the tip is mostly consistent, though the purple-white transition near the base differs between figures.

S.H.MonsterArts Godzilla (2016) [Awakening Ver.] -Movie Graphic Plus- – Variance Comparison Godzilla (2016) [Awakening Ver.] makes a comeback in the new Movie Graphic Plus subline. This marks the eighth time we’ve seen this mold in the S.H.MonsterArts line, but only the second variant of Shin’s Awakening form. Since the original Awakening release was never distributed in the US, many western collectors have been looking forward to this version to help fill that void. So, let’s take a look at how things turned out across these four figures. Firstly, the figure is made entirely of translucent plastic. The base material is dyed a metallic purple and painted over with a silver coating to control the light-piping effect in certain areas. Because of this, you can expect a massive amount of variance between figures. There are, however, areas where the intended translucency remains fairly consistent. Starting with the head, the base paint is consistent across each figure. The red inner eye sockets are also well done, creating a nice glow effect. Eye direction varies between figures, with two looking downward in the intended direction, while the other two face forward or centered. Expect major variance in the teeth paint application, especially in how thickly it is applied, with some teeth appearing sharper than others. What remains consistent is the white line of paint above the teeth. In my opinion it doesn’t look great, but it is clearly meant to simulate a charging glow effect.
