A law saying Linux must do age verification at account setup misunderstands what Linux is.
Linux doesn’t have “account signups.” It creates local system users, not online identities. No email, no central service, no universal setup flow where age could even be checked.
Most Linux systems don’t even have a human at the keyboard. Linux runs servers, routers, cloud VMs, containers, IoT devices, and embedded systems. Many installs are headless, automated, and finished in seconds. Who is supposed to verify their age — the server?
Linux also isn’t a single product. It’s open-source code. Anyone can remove an age check, fork the installer, compile from source, or deploy via scripts like PXE or cloud-init. There is no enforcement point by design.
It works offline by default. Air-gapped networks, hospitals, military systems, and critical infrastructure depend on Linux functioning without internet or external identity services. Age verification assumes connectivity and centralized trust — Linux explicitly does not.
Even if you forced verification once, it’s meaningless. Images get cloned, VMs get spun up, containers get copied endlessly. Verification doesn’t scale — copying does.
Forcing age checks into Linux would also weaken security, adding new code paths, dependencies, and identity data to systems that prioritize minimalism and control.
You can regulate platforms.
You can’t regulate open-source infrastructure like Linux at install time.
That’s simply how Linux is built.
