The people that DO choose to use it will render this disc useless. What's stopping them from selling the disc? Then if someone buys that disc second hand, it won't work.
This would effectively destroy the used market. You'll never buy with confidence again.

Microsoft is working on a new system called Positron that could let Xbox players turn their physical game discs into digital copies.
The idea is simple: you put the disc in your console or drive, the system checks that you own the game, and then it adds a digital version to your Xbox account.
Once converted, the game would work with cloud gaming, play on many devices, and fit better with new hardware, while the physical disc would likely stop working afterward to stop people from sharing or selling the same copy.
We do not know which games would work, if it costs money, or when it might launch, and Microsoft has not confirmed it, so this is still just a rumor.

Maybe they should have some sort of detection where if the system detects that a converted disk has been inserted into a console with an account different to the original one, they’ll let the game play on the new account but remove the digital access from the other.

I’m also now unable to buy the digital one to play on pc. With this, I could borrow someone’s Xbox, sign in w my account, then convert the disc.

When Sony announced in 2013 that PS+ is required to play online on PS4, PS fans didn't suddenly switch to Xbox or PC.
If Nintendo games were on Xbox & PS, the Switch would still have its loyal fan base.
