@Demoman1960 in this instance I jumped as my team was clearly holding W towards the cart which let me 'checkmate' the enemy team. if the enemies look at my team they get pelted by rockets and die (clip). but if they look up to shoot me they'll get deleted by my team, so no winning

@TF2SolarLight Reminds me how back then I tried plays like this but either I got unlucky enough to get sniped or getting shot from the low ground. Either everyone else is luckier than me or I am truly skill issued.

@comea62201 honestly with infinite deploys idk why you wouldn't just spam spacebar if you wanted to descend while on fire. but with 1 deploy you'd have to make a choice between falling or not descending

@TF2SolarLight It was pretty bad to be on fire with the parachute, but there were some gimmicks. I'm trying to abuse that upward parachute deploy range trick atm. But my rocket jumping is pedestrian....

@Wackymaddoktor the parachute mains call this "base boosting" and I was the one who told him about it. it's also the most common name suggestion so yeah the chute has a hidden stat that is basically "+50% horizontal knockback taken while deployed" and it also applies to your own rocket jumps

@TF2SolarLight Oh, well worth a shot (And apparently your distance if you deploy and un-deploy soon after a rocket jump, from a person called Htwo, which he called it as Base jumper tech, maybe this is something that you can do for future casual with your friends perhaps.)

@comea62201 flame updraft was removed in tough break. tbh I can understand why because noob pyros would be trolling their team by accident by buffing the enemy soldier. that said it was probably more of a grief when it had infinite deploys and scout speed (instead of current engi speed)

@TF2SolarLight People have always bashed the parachute. I used to dodge headshots like mad with that until they nerfed it. Its still great at that, but I miss the old days of being on fire and floating like a leaf

@CAMIKAZE78 @TierZoo very well put, reminds me of a tf2 parachute people want buffed because they don't realize that not every individual item in an entire game has to cater to the lower skill group (parachute in this case is a high-skill movement item)

Don’t get me wrong, there are bad, loud actors on my side of the fence too. You’ll never see me deny that. However, the large majority of the skilled community actually want casuals to feel uplifted and welcomed. Some FPS games do this well, by giving lower skilled players a means to upskill themselves with easier to use weapons, that are less potent against their harder to use counterparts. Thus, presenting a healthy skill curve. Every level headed pro will support this approach because it means a healthier onboarding to their favourite game, keeping the community strong. The angle I’m taking speaks to the 2-6 hour a week player who expects to top the scoreboard with minimal effort, and that there should be no depth to mechanics that better players can leverage. Because that is certainly a growing rhetoric in the community, and one that I think needs to be addressed. Depth is what breeds replayability.

“Toxic casuals” in the gaming community who not only reject, but advocate for the removal of skill gaps in games have done more damage to gaming than any “try hard” ever has. Gaming casually is perfectly fine, but losing to those who take the time to learn, embrace, and master the mechanics of a game should be expected and accepted if you do play more casually.
