Petr Magyar is offering Orbánism with a human face. To defeat the monster, Peter Magyar has had to become the monster, stripping away the corruption and the toxic rhetoric but keeping the nationalist welfare populism intact. The new Tisza manifesto protects every one of Fidesz’s sacred cows. Magyar has pledged to retain the 13th-month pension, maintain the utility price caps backed by Russian gas, and keep the southern border fence firmly shut. His pitch is not an ideological return to the European mainstream, but better management of Orban's system: he promises to unlock €20bn in frozen EU funds by stopping the corruption, not by dismantling the illiberal state. But the underlying Hungarian state remains unchanged. Even if he wins the election, he will be a prisoner in his own office. Fidesz has so thoroughly captured the judiciary, the media, and the budget council with loyalists on decade-long terms that Magyar may sit in the driver's seat, but the engine, the brakes, and the steering wheel will remain in Viktor Orbán’s hands.
