Mentoring students at a MS/UG institution already feels fleeting. But losing that connection prematurely is even tougher. So, savor those moments you get to do science with students, as they're the best part of this job IMO.

Trevor did win the @SSAR Rabb Award at #JMIH23 presenting on this work, so I’m glad he got that recognition.

The weekend was capped off by hitting up the CMNH and finding some Pittsburgh desmog salamanders (which I misidentified of course) #JMIH24 #JMIH2024

@SolomonRDavid It was in a seasonally flooded area of a slow moving stream on our campus in the STL metro area (pic from a while ago but more or less looks the same)

@TLAmphib Very cool! Given you’re in IL those could be any of three species at that size/stage (without specific habitat/locality). Longnose Gars spawn the earliest, but those snouts look a bit short for that life stage; could be Longnose or Shortnose. May be early for Spotted Gar…

Is having two developing #salamanders in the same egg capsule common? This is in spotted salamander eggs

@cy_mott @TomRadomski4 Same here of really warm but dry. We did get a pulse of movement by tigrinum and texanum though in very early Feb or late Jan on our last heavy rain. there were eggs in the pond on Feb 6

Spotted salamanders exhibit tremendous variation in their spot patterns, ranging from no spots, to "headlights" (spots only on heads), to small dots, to large "globs", and several other forms #amphibian #herpetology #caudata #fieldbiology
