@CarineNantulya: Human Rights Watch research across Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger documents serious violations of international human rights and humanitarian law by all parties to the conflict.

@JonTemin: In this context, policy makers must exercise great caution to avoid being associated with the regimes’ abuses against their citizens.

@JonTemin: That these governments are unelected, and citizens have no mechanism to hold them to account, means that military leaders can continue to pursue destructive counterterrorism strategies that show little or no signs of succeeding.

@Kondoba: The United States has an opportunity—not to impose solutions—but to stand consistently for principles that align security with human dignity.

@Kondoba: One of the most dangerous misconceptions is that human rights can be temporarily sidelined in the name of security. In reality, abuses are not a byproduct of insecurity—they are a driver of it.

@Kondoba: Civilians are no longer collateral victims; they are increasingly direct targets; entire communities are trapped between armed extremist groups and state-aligned forces; fear, displacement, and silence define daily life.

@Kondoba: The Sahel is currently enduring a profound humanitarian crisis, fueled by persistent insecurity across several countries—particularly Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger where millions of people have been forced to flee their homes.

In the latest injustice against Tofig Yagublu, the Supreme Court of #Azerbaijan rejected his appeal last week. #Tofig is an outspoken government critic, and long-time target of President Aliyev’s regime. His most recent arrest in Dec 2023 was another attempt to silence him.

4 years ago today, citizen journalist Iryna Danylovych was arrested for publishing on the rights of medical workers under Russian occupation. She was sentenced to 7 years in prison. Russia must release her immediately & without conditions. #DefendingFreedoms
