This is a perennial playoff team that plans to win the Super Bowl this year. The expectation is that this number 13 pick is the highest pick they will have before Stafford retires, and the best opportunity to get a QB for the future without giving up serious draft capital

@LARamilyMan There’s no guarantee any first round pick would help win a Super Bowl anyway However the success of QBs increases the higher up the draft they are picked

@TL_LARams The problem is they need to win the SB and this does NOT help that pursuit at all. And the QB they’re betting on is not a first round talent. Just an average journeyman type

Kind of true, but also not. When you aren’t in another teams stadium, you benefit from them not having a home field advantage too. I’d prefer to play Seattle in LA than in Seattle, for example.

If I’m Matthew Stafford, with one last shot at a SB, and already a ton of money in the bank, I’m renegotiating my contact lower to help the team get more studs. I certainly wouldn’t be increasing my cap hit. But I’m not Matthew Stafford.
