vincentgrenier.substack.com/p/the-top-10is… Doing the substack thing again! This time with the preface to a series on analyzing players from 2005. Going to be pretty casual but hopefully more dedicated. Future iterations will have more detail; just wanted to get the initial thoughts out there.

@CS11__ A lot of fans disliked how the finale framed Dexter as a bad guy but idk man that's kind of the show lol. Yeah he's a human but he's a fucking massive serial killer. He's not a hero.

Can’t get enough of this scene. The visual of Dexter Morgan being arrested. The idea that he’s finally been outmanoeuvred by Angela with nowhere to go And Radiohead’s ‘A Wolf At The Door’ compliments the entire moment so unbelievably well

Again, some of this is the result of good process, some of this is teambuilding, but when the swings are extreme enough you have to factor in some element of luck in your analysis.

This includes 6 of the 8 games this weekend. Orlando's upset of Detroit? 46% from 3 sure helps. New York tieing the series? 21% 3PT gap. MIN/DEN meltdown? Denver -21%- from 3. Boston 24 of 53 led to a blowout. Houston 40% vs 22% = easy win. Even San Antonio were helped by 42%.

For all the talk of the possession game being important, and with the caveat that sometimes 3s are a reward for good process elsewhere, about half of the playoff games so far have been defined in a significant way by a 3PT value added gap.

@bigmacadamia55 A part of me genuinely does think they'd look a LOT better if they had guys in Reaves & Luka to pick on Not having the stars made the Lakers role players show up & play hard + smart which is an unsustainable combo for the Rockets to go vs most of the time

Obviously the whole Rockets project feels like it’s rubble at the moment but when it’s working I really do get it. I understand.

@dailythunder His flexibility / handling is genuinely at that level tho, he's a 100th percentile athlete at his raw dexterity at his size, even all-time nobody's really moved like him Maybe Penny is the only one that comes close

Your first name: the player who's helped his reputation the most in the playoffs so far. Your last name: the player who's hurt his reputation the most. What's your full name?

@aryh21 I wonder how much having a full year off helped Steph regain his prime in 2021/2022 and if honestly stars should just accept that more often

Real talk this Jokic shit shows how much lower body injuries affect players even after they’ve healed and this stuff really accumulates over the years It’s why I wholeheartedly believe Steph was never the same after playing through the 2016 MCL sprain

I don't really think Jokic's defense has been THAT BAD in the Minnesota series so far - a nuanced conversation can be had - but the eye test has never been good at analyzing his defense. (doesn't really matter either way because his O has been so bad)

In comparison the data is more likely to blame his teammates for limitations within the context of the scheme Jokic enforces, while being kinder to his positioning and seeing stuff like his great hands (great STL% for a C) and outlier defensive rebounding

Jokic speaks to how hard it is to properly evaluate defense. The eye sees Jokic's consistent drop tendency (rightfully) as a schematic limiter over the course of playoff series, and his at-times good position as (sometimes unfairly) ineffective due to his lack of vert rimD

@A3per_ Even clutch time/good defense RS is still practice without adjustment the vast majority of the time. PS is all about solving problems as they arise, finding creases in the opponent actions, trying to build a game for yourself. RS aint like that at all.

Just anecdotally, RS performance against t15/10/5 teams doesn't seem to be a good proxy for Playoff translation at all. If anyone's seen an actual statistical analysis on it I'd really appreciate it.

@JuantheGreat25 Thing is he can play the 4, makes his defense way more of a positive and his offense is just more fluid off the catch

@CS11__ How much of the finale hate do you think is people not having a healthy relationship to Dexter & not being happy with an ending that in any way punishes him for, you know, being a serial killer?

I did this for Dexter S8 & it was way easier to manage so i’ll do it again. Is there any post New Blood questions i can answer. I got a lot of replies (I love y’all) but it’ll be easier to answer them here.

About half of the replies I get to any attempt at serious discussion are like this these days. I’ve been here for well over a decade; I started here because it was a great place to have interesting conversations with people about hoops. Now it’s only a place to get takes off.

@francistennn 2020s stars are kind of the inverse, raised to maximize regular season optimization in a league that's increasingly tilting towards hard defense slant ugliness in the playoffs due to reffing/motor/intensity weirdness

2010s stars were a fake, once in a lifetime gen: developed on rough 2000s hoops, developing resilient/layered skillsets to thrive in that environment, but their primes happen as offense starts to modernize, so there’s this rare overlap of stress-tested skill and team optimization
D.O.C@DOC323123

All the 2020 superstars suck by the standard of their predecessors in the other era guys, I agree not a hill imma die on

@jasehoops 2 offensive rebounds in 2 games from an all-time offensive center is an understated story, 1000%. Credit Gobert, but that's not alright.

the spike in Jokic’s 3p volume trickles down to every aspect of his offense, he doesn’t get the same number of putbacks and overall playfinishing buckets that inflates his regular season efficiency and it pulls him out of the MOF where his playmaking operates the most

The story is that this 123 oRTG Denver offense just put up a 96 oRTG in large part because the best offensive player in basketball put up 7-26, 2 oreb, 3:4 AST:TOV. Blaming his defense is absolving Jokic of what truly makes this performance terrible by his standards

People are misreading this Jokic situation. Have his defensive lows been real? Ya, but he's an awesome defensive rebounder, good positioning -- his defense hasn't magically changed, nor has Denver's defense overall these last 2 games.
