A permanent Charter won't end government control over the BBC. The BBC must be run democratically, by the British public Worse, Lisa Nandy's speech on BBC reform - at a private corporate media event - violates principles of open & transparent policymaking mediareform.org.uk/blog/bbc-chart…

@TheNewWorldmag @rosamundmtaylor Appreciate this tweet is barely 1/50th of Ros's article, but I doubt Auntie Beeb has much role in letting CW do or not do anything - the show is made by ITV Studios

This "bizarre situation" hasn't troubled the BBC, the Government or Auntie's establishment defenders for the last 100 years, and the political motivations behind seeing this as a fix-all constitutional reform are as transparent as they are disingenuous

What was the point having 10,000s of people “have your say” in the public consultation, if barely a week after it closes the Culture Secretary is announcing reforms at a conference for the corporate press?

The irony is this statement proves a permanent Charter is a worthless non-reform. Nevermind when or how often you have Charter reviews - or even if one is happening right now! - because the Culture Sec can declare any old change to the BBC without democratic process
Michael Savage@michaelsavage

NEW: Nandy vows to give the BBC a permanent charter as she tries to protect it from the culture war age. There will be tough news for the BBC ahead, but this is a win for the broadcaster and outgoing DG, Tim Davie. theguardian.com/media/2026/mar…

@acatherwoodnews At the start of the episode, Andrea reports that DCMS told Feedback they have no plans *at all* for further public engagement in Charter renewal. Somehow this review could end up being even more antidemocratic and opaque than the last one!

A pleasure to speak w @acatherwoodnews on Radio 4's Feedback about what's next for BBC Charter renewal. The tick-box DCMS consultation closed this week. Now it's up to the BBC & parliament to give the public a meaningful role in deciding the BBC's future: bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…

Really enjoyed speaking with Andrea & @BBCR4Feedback about BBC Charter renewal. We discussed how this review risks repeating the mistakes of 10 years ago, and what Gov & the BBC should do to give the public a real role in shaping the BBC's future 3:30 today or listen on Sounds!

Charter renewal has just passed a vital milestone, as the public survey from the DCMS closed this week. On Feedback, @acatherwoodnews talks to an expert about the agreement that allows the BBC to operate. Listen live on @BBCRadio4 or catch up on @BBCSounds. #BBCR4Feedback

15.30 today then @BBCSounds. @acatherwoodnews talks to @TMChivers, academic at Goldsmiths, University of London, who did a PhD on charter renewal about what the #BBC can do to reach its audience during a consultation that could result in radical change.

One might have very lofty debates about the necessary existence of public media, what forms are best for democratic benefit etc. etc., But for the DG to say "we have no right to exist" just after asking for a permanent Royal Charter seems the opposite of promoting 'bold choices'

"A cooperative BBC based on membership" Bold proposals from @CooperativesUK in response to Charter Review, calling for a mutual BBC owned & accountable to the public Grateful that they have drawn on MRC & @Cmmonwealth's proposals on mutualisation: common-wealth.org/publications/o…

Does the relationship between the British public & BBC need a re-set? We’re proposing a member-owned BBC where licence fee payers become members with a real voice in how it's run. Owned by the public & accountable. You can back our campaign👇 buff.ly/OdtHYx0 #BBC #Coops

@TMChivers @mediareformUK @CommonsCMS Well I’m amazed you received a reply so quickly about anything like this. 1000s of freelancers unemployed and 74% of the industry thinking of leaving, but the CMS remains as silent as the Culture Sec

But especially given the systemic pressures on its funding model, the BBC’s own future must now be secured with ambition and principle from the UK Government. This is our chance to say so 👇 campaignforthearts.org/reports/a-stag… (3/3)

We’re entering the final hours of the government’s consultation on the future of the BBC (deadline = 23:59). Far more than just a broadcaster, the BBC is a cultural organisation with a unique role in our creative ecology and shared national life. (1/3) campaignforthearts.org/reports/a-stag…

It's true the (rushed, leading, tickbox) DCMS survey ends in a few days. That should not & must not be the only chance for public participation in Charter review In 2015-16 the CMS Committee held 2 evidence rich, marathon length inquiries on the BBC - will they do the same now?

A weirdly misleading tweet from the CMS Committee chair. This inquiry is about children's TV, for which the BBC is the dominant (but not only) funder The Committee has still not started its own Charter review inquiry, even though government wants it done and dusted by summer
Caroline Dinenage MP@cj_dinenage

The BBC charter review, defining its purpose & powers, will conclude by the end of this year. On Tuesday @CommonsCMS heard evidence from @BBC about their role commissioning kid's TV. You can still leave your views about the BBC before next week. gov.uk/government/con…
