Always a treat to host the Godolphin Flying Start trainees. I think it’s fair to say they were blown away with Mindframe (and his luscious mane), as we all are. He’s always been physically imposing, but the way he has filled into his body at stud is a sight to behold.

§11–520. Transfer or Sale of Preakness Stakes (a) The requirements of this section are established in recognition of the significance of the Preakness Stakes to the State. (b) The Preakness Stakes may be transferred to another track in the State only: (1) as a result of a disaster or emergency; or (2) during the reconstruction of Pimlico Race Course, subject to the approval of the Maryland Thoroughbred Racetrack Operating Authority. (c) If the Preakness Stakes is transferred out of the State, the Commission may: (1) revoke any racing days awarded to the Maryland Jockey Club of Baltimore City, Inc., or its successor; and (2) take any other action the Commission considers necessary. (d) (1) If the Preakness Stakes is offered for sale, the State has the option to buy the Preakness Stakes for the amount of any offer that the licensee wishes to accept from a third party. (2) The option to buy under paragraph (1) of this subsection is in addition to any other rights of the State. This statute explicitly ties the race to Pimlico Race Course (located in Baltimore City) as the default. The only built-in exceptions for moving it within Maryland are a disaster/emergency or the current reconstruction period (which covers the 2026 running at Laurel Park).
Andrew Champagne@AndrewChampagne

Your reminder as "THEY'RE GOING TO MOVE THE PREAKNESS" chatter picks up: The Preakness, by law, cannot leave the state of Maryland.

The obvious horse racing question for today- how is the Santa Anita Handicap still a G1 when it’s winner can’t manage a top 4 finish in the G3 Ben Ali at Keeneland? Meanwhile, the Oaklawn Handicap with Sovereignty, Journalism and White Abarrio runs as a G2 today. AGSC on the ⏰.

The Oaklawn Handicap is everything this sport is supposed to be. Winners of the Derby, Preakness, Belmont, & a Breeders Cup Classic all in one gate and it is not even sure to be on TV. That’s a problem. A race this good shouldn’t be hidden behind a app or channel surf. #inthedark

White Abarrio was awesome. This was White Abarrio’s best career race in my opinion, including his Breeders Cup Classic win. @iradortiz gave him an absolutely terrific ride and trip, riding him with all the confidence in the world. What a fun race! That race was great for horse racing. And in all honesty, racing needed a race like that. Hopefully there are more of those in the future.

$10,500,000 is about 25% of what the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (as one example) has awarded in grants *since 2012*. This industry has the resources to fund aftercare, just not the will, and every day we don't, we flirt with flushing our social license down the drain.

This is why we need reporters on TV to cover horse racing. As much as we consume the trade journals, this story by @MaggieWolfndale and the recent one by @andie_biancone showcasing Renegade provide the color, personality, & beating heart that is so central to horse racing.

@JonLindo60 Agree it should definitely be addressed but what’s the remedy now? Can’t get the race back where you’re 3-1 ML. Happened to us as the 7-5 favorite at Keeneland in the Franklin. You just don’t get those opportunities back. Sucks.

100% unacceptable. Trainers are held accountable. Owners are held accountable. Who holds the racing officials accountable? Take your case to track management at Tampa - some good people there.
Darin Zoccali@atTheTrack7

I try to stay optimistic in racing, both as an industry employee and horse owner, but the last 12 months are making it increasingly difficult. Today, our filly Unfaithful Rose was ordered scratched by the state stewards in Florida from a stake race at Tampa. Why? Because despite our trainer (who ran a horse in the Kentucky Derby last year) submitting all his paperwork for Florida licensing in the timeframe requested and despite them having all the documentation since Thursday, an employee in the racing state agency’s licensing office never put through the verification on his finger prints and thus because of their incompetence, the stewards scratched our filly. Meanwhile, Ethan West is the epitome of what you want in a horse trainer. A decade of training, not a single positive test, an honest and true horsemen. Our ownership group, deeply committed to aftercare, has routinely given away horses to families rather than drop them in for a cheap tag, is comprised of “little guys” trying to do the best we can for our horses. We shipped this filly from Kentucky to Florida and she was 3-1 on the morning line with a real chance in the race. Not to mention we have about 10 owners who traveled down to Florida for the race. I am absolutely flabbergasted and beyond discouraged by all of this. They should be ashamed of themselves for punishing us for their own incompetence. In an economic climate where small stables and owners are struggling to survive, this is how we are treated? Absolutely shameful. @TampaBayDownsFL @florida_horse @thoroughcrowd

@jenine_sahadi @JonLindo60 The Compact at least really helps. One application, one time fingerprinting and you’re licensed in whatever states you ask to be.

@JonLindo60 This shouldn’t be an issue anywhere. The fact that we are still licensing state by state is absurd. A multi state license should be easy to implement in 2026. Feels like a money grab 🙄
