Meet Olive Ala, a former Tonga National University undergraduate scholar. Through the TOML Scholarship Programme, she completed her Bachelor’s degree, interned with TOML’s Statistics Department, and now serves as a Fishery Officer with Tonga’s Ministry of Fisheries.

Meet Ana Vi from Tongoleleka, Ha’apai. A TOML Scholar and USP Environmental Management graduate, Ana interned with Tonga’s Dept. of Statistics through TOML’s internship programme before securing a Town Planner role with the Ministry of Lands, Survey, Planning & Natural Resources.

This industry is driving deep-sea research globally. Our $250 million environmental program has already resulted in the publication of 37 peer-reviewed studies based on the world’s largest deep-sea dataset—at over a petabyte in size. As researchers study this dataset and we move toward continuously monitored commercial operations, we expect hundreds of published papers in the months and years ahead. Where are they now? Meet Fatafehi Petulisa Hoponoa from Tofoa. With TOML support, she completed her BSc in Chemistry & Biology, interned with MLSPNR, and is now an Assistant Geologist supporting fieldwork and seismic monitoring. Malo Fehi!

Tailulu College, a TOML 2025 Youth Fund recipient, has completed its funded project and expanded its awareness program. TOML returned for a classroom competition, where students presented posters on social issues and planted a Heilala tree in recognition of TOML’s support.

Today marks five years since the passing of TOML’s former Country Manager, Tina. We honor her legacy and passion for youth development through scholarships for Tongans, supporting 81 students in 2026, including recent engagement with USP Fiji recipients.

TOML donated heavy-duty cooking pots to the Kaafataha ‘a Nukuseilala women’s group on Niuatoputapu. Shipping this week, they’ll help boil pandanus leaves for fine mat weaving. The Community Assistance Program supports Tongatapu, Vava’u, Ha’apai, ’Eua and the Niuas.

The deadline for Round 1 of the 2026 Community Assistance Program is one week from today, Monday 20 April. Application forms are available for collection at our office or can be requested via email at simulata.taufa@metals.co.

Reconnected with Nikolasi Heni and Folauhola Latuʻila after their month-long ISA AUV deep-sea training in Tasmania. They shared how the course strengthened practical deep-sea mining skills and will support their work in Natural Resources.
